Smiling Samoyed Brewery
Location: 20-22 Hansen St, Myponga
Cost: $70 per person or $89 including a matched beer with each course, $25 per child
Of all the ways to treat your mum this Mother’s day, there’s not much better than taking her to a brewery with good food, good beer and adorable fluffy dogs.
Smiling Samoyed Brewery in Myponga, of course named after their owners favourite dog breed, are offering all of the above including a Samoyed cookie decorating activity for the kiddies.
The brewery came about in 2012 with owner Kate Henning describing its creation as “a home brewing hobby gotten out of control.”
“I bought a home-brewing kit for my boyfriend at the time — now husband — and we made some pretty bad beer not knowing what we were doing,” Ms Henning said.
After some research into beer-making, the couple perfected their recipe so much so that their friends asked to buy their beer. The rest was history and the brewery opened not long after.
Ms Henning owns the brewery with husband Simon Dunstone and the two have two kids, six year old Alvin and three year old Harriett.
The original smiling samoyeds — Mia, Cooper and Poppet — are unfortunately no longer with us but have each been honoured with their own tribute beer which is available for sale. The current Samoyed ambassa-dogs are the ever-fluffy and friendly Hoppy and Kent.
Fate called in terms of Hoppy — Ms Henning and Mr Dunstone got a call from the RSPCA about Hoppy on the day they were brewing their Poppet tribute beer batch.
“We bring the dogs to the brewery pretty much every day for people to have a pat and a cuddle,” Ms Henning said.
“People come for a range of reasons but quite a lot of people come to see the dogs.”
On Mother’s Day this year the brewery will be putting on a three-course lunch which includes a seafood share plate to start, then a pizza share plate followed by a dessert share plate. Kids are also catered for with their own menu and will be given a sweet Samoyed shaped cookie to decorate for mum.
