Sam Armytage’s new project: ‘There’s a real freedom to it’

Following her departure from Sunrise, Samantha Armytage opens up about her successful new project.

Samantha Armytage's emotional farewell on Sunrise

It’s the week that she bid a tearful farewell to her role as co-host of Sunrise, but her next venture has already proven to be a huge success.

Only two weeks since launching a new podcast for Stellar magazine, Something To Talk About with Samantha Armytage, the weekly series has quickly climbed into the top five on the Australian podcast charts.

“I’ve had a very good response from everyone I know,” Armytage told Stellar on Friday afternoon.

“People seem to be enjoying the podcast and I’m really thrilled with how many people are tuning in.”

On Thursday, the Sunrise co-host officially stepped away from the breakfast television program she helmed for eight years.

In an emotional on-air speech, she thanked her co-workers and welcomed the new chapter in her life.

Her venture into podcasting is a huge change of pace for the television journalist, who says she is enjoying the opportunity to explore in-depth storytelling.

“I’m loving this long-form journalism,” she told Stellar.

“There’s a real freedom to it. It’s really just like having a chat with a mate. And certainly the Julie Bishop podcast was just that,” she added of last week’s episode, when Armytage sat down with the former deputy leader of the Liberal Party to discuss the treatment of women in Canberra and the group of men who attempted to stymie her career, who dubbed themselves the “big swinging dicks”.

In the latest episode launching this Sunday, Armytage sits down with 2021 Australian of the Year Grace Tame.

“As we all know, Grace is just the most extraordinary young woman and she was very generous with her time. She describes what she’s been through so eloquently and she is super honest and very raw about her experiences,” says Armytage.

“I think she’s quite an inspiration. I think anyone who’s been through anything like this will certainly look up to Grace, and I think she’s helping a lot of people out there.”

According to Ainslee O’Brien, head of News Corp’s audio network NewsCast, “Something To Talk About with Samantha Armytage is now in its third week, and it has proven to be one of the most successful podcast launches we have seen at the network.”

Grace Tame features on episode three of Something To Talk About with Samantha Armytage, available now. Follow or subscribe on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to your podcasts.
