'Spuds gone wild': Mums ALDI potatoes turned X-rated real quick

"Just two days after buying them, they looked like this," the Brisbane woman told Kidspot about the mysterious discovery that no one has ever seen before.

Air fryer smashed potatoes with garlic bacon butter

A Brisbane mum was on her usual weekend grocery run at ALDI when she picked up a bag of potatoes, planning to use them in a recipe the following week.

But come Monday, she discovered that they had grown a mysterious hair-like fur all over them, leaving her completely dumbfounded.

Taking to a local ALDI Mums Facebook group looking for answers, she shared photos of the bizarre discovery but didn't get much help. Instead, the community was left in stitches.

Why, you ask?

Well, her potatoes had taken on an appearance closely resembling... let’s just say, very hairy balls.

The spuds really put the 'root' in root vegetable

The woman, Deirdre, wrote, "Bought these brushed potatoes on Saturday and opened my usual container for storing potatoes in and they look like this."

The potatoes are sitting in a metal container designed for potatoes with a lid and holes, and are covered in thick white hairs.

"Any ideas as I've never seen this before?" she asked.

Cue the gasps and giggles, with everyone chiming into the comments with their cheekiest interpretations.

"I thought this was one of my unhinged mum groups and that the second photo was a testicle," someone wrote.

"OMG,  I came here to say the same thing... looks like balls," someone else replied. "So, so strange."

"My eyes... MY EYES!!! What the actual...?" a different woman exclaimed. "This is going to give me nightmares for a week," another commenter admitted.

Then this user had a more PG take, writing, "I think these potatoes are older than I am. Did they fall behind a wall for several decades, left to grow wise and impart wisdom to other fellow vegetables?"

"I thought they were coconuts," a fifth shared, while another joked, "It's wearing a toupee."

And despite everyone agreeing they've "never seen anything like this before," others still gave their two cents as to what they thought it could be.

People suggested mould, spider webs, an insect laying a nest, mushroom spores or the result of too much heat or humidity.

It could be something called 'mycelium'

Kidspot spoke to Deirdre to find out more about the situation, and whether or not she's got any answers since.

"I bought these potatoes at ALDI Fairfield in Brisbane on the weekend. I went to cook dinner on Monday night and they looked like this. I binned them and at the bottom, there were definitely bad soft potatoes. I haven't contacted ALDI regarding this but did photograph it as never seen it before," she said.

"A fungi expert sent me a message about what they thought it was, saying it could be something called mycelium."

According to Mycropia, "A mycelium is a network of fungal threads. Mycelia often grow underground but can also thrive in other places such as rotting tree trunks."

Kidspot reached out to ALDI and while they weren't able to provide a comment on the matter, they want to remind customers to always reach out if they have an issue and submit any feedback via their help centre.
