South Australian businesses have Christmas presents in the bag

It’s not just about finding the right gift – buying from a local supplier helps South Aussie families prosper, too.

When it comes to buying that perfect Christmas present, South Australians are spoiled for choice. Across the state, home-grown businesses are bursting with unique, quality gift ideas to suit every taste. And, with many festive belts tightening this year after a slew of cost of living rises, there is also an abundance of gifts to suit every budget, too.

But it’s not just about the presents themselves. Buying local has become something of a phenomenon over the past couple of years, with South Australians more passionate than ever about supporting their local – often family run – business. It’s not just about putting money into that one business – it’s about how that money enables that local business to support other local businesses and suppliers in turn.

Nikki Govan knows all about the power of local support. Owner of the Star of Greece restaurant and the Port Willy Kiosk in Port Willunga, Govan employs up to 50 people from the area at the height of the summer season. She also relies heavily on quality produce from local suppliers.

“We love to support our producers – a lot of our seafood and vegetables come from local businesses,” she says. “It’s been a tough few years for everyone – and still is – so we like to think our business is not just supporting and employing people in the local community but also supporting local farmers and growers.”

For those yet to savour the Mediterranean-influenced menu, a Christmas gift voucher offers a mouth-watering experience. “Vouchers start at $100 and can be used for the Port Willy Kiosk or the Star of Greece restaurant,” Govan says. “In the kiosk that might cover the cost of their entire meal – people can pick up fish and chips and take it down to the beach and really feel a part of what is a very Australian summer thing to do. Otherwise the voucher can go towards a dining experience in the restaurant where guests can enjoy local King George whiting, Port Willunga squid or a number of daily specials such as Kangaroo Island scallops. We also have a wonderful grill where we offer fantastic steaks and we cater for any dietary requirements, so everyone is welcome.”

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY

Elle Hill owner Vanessa Hillman also offers gifts that go to the heart of giving. Born out of tragedy – the business is named after her daughter, who passed away aged four – Hillman designs and creates custom-made, hand-stamped jewellery. Launching with personalised necklaces, the stunning range now includes earrings, rings, pendants, anklets, chains and more, with prices starting from $25.

“It’s just creating special pieces that mean a lot to somebody,” Hillman says. “It’s a really thoughtful gift. It’s not just something you can just pick up off the rack. Whenever people are gifting my pieces, they’ve put a lot of thought into what the person would like.”

Hillman runs the business with the support of her husband and two young sons. “One of the things for me is that my children are so proud of the business,” she says. “The way they talk about it” ‘My mum makes this jewellery ...’ I feel like it’s such a great thing for them to see us turning something so traumatic into something beautiful as well and really celebrating Elle. And to see a strong female figure in their life, I love that.”

As a small, family run business, she is a strong supporter of other local businesses. “Whenever people buy from my business, that money is going to get reinvested back into the community because we just know how important it is to look after each other,” she says. “I try to get all my supplies where possible from local people.”

DUCKS IN A ROW

Gaynor Harding loves running a business in Moonta. Four-and-a-half years ago, she moved to the Yorke Peninsula where she eventually opened Mother Duck and Mee, a baby and children’s store specialising in locally made products.

“I have items from businesses in Moonta, a few from the Yorke Peninsula and I have one supplier in the Barossa Valley,” she says. “Lots of people have described my shop as being a bit unique because I don’t buy in bulk. I mostly source one of each size in a range of clothing – once it’s gone, I can replenish it with something else.

“The feedback I get from people is that they like that. It’s nice to buy a present knowing someone else possibly won’t end up with the same. I have lots of repeat customers who come from Adelaide to buy brands they don’t see in the city, so I’ve got to be doing something right.”

The store is bursting with Christmas gift items, including books, clothing, handmade cards, sunscreen, shoes, swimming towels, maternity wear and more. “I have locally made earrings, Christmas-themed baby bibs, teething necklaces, Christmas books, giant floor puzzles and sand-free towels,” Harding says. “There is lots to choose from.”
