‘Shrinkflation’ has been the word on everyone’s lips over the past few years, with the rising cost of living being met with shortages of almost everything. And the result? All your favourite foods get cut in half - at the same price as the original, of course.
Shoppers are starting to notice one Aussie favourite in particular has been a major victim to the phenomenon - and no one is happy about it.

“Is this just how big a Magnum ice cream is now?
An Aussie Reddit user has taken to the platform after noticing his magnum looked a little smaller than he remembered.
“Is this a special servo size or is this just how big a Magnum ice cream is now?” he asked in the r/australia subreddit.
“Haven't had a Magnum ice cream in ages. I swear these were three times bigger when I was a kid. It’s about as big as a couple fingers now.”
And, in the photo attached, he provided proof - a Magnum no bigger than the size of his thumb.
“Very underwhelming”
Aussies in the comments assured the poster that he was right - Magnums are not quite what they used to be.
“What used to be the mini became the regular a long time ago. Absolutely not worth the purchase given the quality also dropped massively from when they were first released,” one person said.
“The chocolate is much thinner now. I bought two at the footy the other night for $7 each and they were very underwhelming,” another agreed.
“20 years ago they were at least 50% bigger and had twice the chocolate!” said another person.
“Yep. The chocolate is also thinner and they replaced the ice cream with that weird gelatinous ‘iced confection’ rubbish. So sad,” another person said.
So… how bad is it really?
Those saying this was no new news were right, as Magnums were first shrunk by about 1cm as a cost-cutting measure back in 2017.
In March 2023, the decision was made to cut the number of ice creams sold in a multipack of Magnums from four to three - though the price remained for shoppers.
Kidspot has contacted Unilever for comment.
