13. COURTNEY BARNETT

Courtney Barnett, one of Australia’s most successful musical exports of the past few years, is playing WOMADelaide for the first time. And she can’t wait. Barnett will take to the main stage in the prime Saturday night spot on March 12 – her first show in Adelaide for three years – in the wake of a 25-stop national tour of the US this month, featuring her new record “Things Take Time, Take Time” which landed last year.

14. SPRINGTIME

Gareth Liddiard’s latest project, and the one he’s bringing to WOMADelaide, is a dark, jazzy trio he’s formed with Jim White from The Dirty Three, and Chris Abrahams of The Necks. The trademark vocals and scratchy guitars of The Drones and Tropical F..k Storm frontman are still present, but now they are underpinned by Abraham’s driving piano and White’s unique drumming. It works beautifully.

Now London-based, virtuoso musician Tawadros will return to WOMADelaide to perform its opening concert with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra,as well as a set with his percussionist brother James.

THE CAT EMPIRE

This is the last chance for WOMADelaideans to experience the original line-up with trademark blend of earthy horns, cheeky grooves and full-throated choruses, its wild brew of ska, jazz, funk, indie, rock, hip hop, Latin music and whatever else takes their fancy. The Cat Empire are retiring the original line-up at WOMAD and will move “forward as a reimagined collective featuring different musicians from around the world”. But as frontman Felix Riebl says, WOMADelaide is “about the original line-up. About this extraordinary project that took on a life of its own, so much bigger than any of us could have dreamt or imagined. And it’s about WOMADelaide, the festival that helped us on our way. The festival we love the most.” What a way to go out.
