SCOTT Huggins and Emma McCaskill, the young couple in charge of the kitchen at Penfold’s Magill Estate, have been named Australia’s “Best New Talent” in the annual Gourmet Traveller restaurant awards, announced last night.

The pair, who came to Magill last year after working in prestigious restaurants in Tokyo, were praised by the judges for their “subtle, elegant and absolutely convincing” cooking.

Magill was the highest-rated of the state’s restaurants in a national top 100, ranked at 10, ahead of Orana at 16.

Appellation, Hentley Farm, Peel Street, Bistro Dom and Fino also featured in the list.

Attica, in Melbourne, was named Restaurant of the Year, while Martin Benn, from Sepia in Sydney, was Chef of the Year.
