One Eleven Stirling, Adelaide Hills short-stay accommodation review

If you’re looking for a quaint Adelaide Hills getaway in a supreme location, this is the place for you. But it’s not doing anything to solve our state’s housing crisis.

Airbnb homes listed for five figures during Gather Round

First things first, let’s address the elephant in the room. When you’re staying in the Adelaide Hills with the weather getting a little crisp in autumn, you want the hot water to be working.

Sadly that wasn’t the case when we arrived at the uber-cute One Eleven Stirling cottage, tucked neatly off Mount Barker Rd in the trendy Adelaide Hills village town, for a short-stay holiday.

Thankfully, the inconvenience was minimised by the proximity of the Stirling Hotel for a nice dinner and an attentive property manager, who sought to have a new gas bottle installed promptly the next morning so our hot water supply was returned. And with that minor wrinkle out of the way, we were clear to truly enjoy our little getaway in the Hills.

And what a place to do it from. One Eleven is a delightfully restored 1890s cottage boasting oodles of character – think high ceilings, jarrah floors and fireplace (only available for use in winter) – but now fitted with a stack of modern and comfortable amenities.

The home, once a drapery shop in a past life, has three good-size bedrooms (main with a king and two others with queen beds), an open lounge/dining area decked with warm interiors and a separate study/workspace.

There’s a country-style kitchen complete with top appliances and tea, coffee and milk, but sadly no basic pantry staples such as oil. Topping it off inside there’s a renovated bathroom, full laundry and a sunroom. The airconditioning is top-notch too.

Outside it has a quaint cottage garden feel about it and, given the right conditions, the courtyard is a delightful space.

While the cottage does boast plenty of comfort if you’re wanting to stay put inside, perhaps its crowning glory is its location. All of Stirling’s amenities and attractions are all within about a 10-minute walk of One Eleven.

With a car, the Hills become your oyster to explore from a highly desirable home base.

The cottage is a prime example of why investors are turning to platforms like Airbnb to lease their property for shorter holiday stays, as opposed to locking into longer term leases.

A two-night stay at the cottage, costing around $1000-$1200 including the cleaning fee, would reap far more than the weekly rent on a longer lease.

And while a night for $500 may sound on the steeper side, the cottage comfortably sleeps six so you could fill it up and spend less than $100 a person, a night, which all of a sudden becomes very affordable.

The property lends itself as a top spot for a little getaway from the city for a weekend, or a longer stay for those coming from further afield and keen to explore the region.

It would also be perfect accommodation for a nearby Hills wedding, be it for a bridal party or a group of guests.

It might not be a great outcome for the state’s housing shortage crisis, but One Eleven Stirling ticks plenty of boxes if you’re looking for a Hills getaway.
