IT’S EASY being green today.
Green cocktails, sauces and even beers will colour St Patrick’s Day parties, while a whopping 27,514 pints of Guinness are expected to be downed across the state.
That’s a fair slice of the 13 million pints expected to be drunk around the world today, and very good news for the local Guinness that emanates from our own West End Brewery.
Pub-goer Laura De Rosa, 20, has happily discovered a fancier mix.
“I love getting into the spirit of St Patrick’s Day but my drink will be an Emerald Martini with a splash of Midori to get in the Irish mood,” she said.
The rejigged Gully Public House and Garden is serving up the cocktail and is also adding Guinness to its fish batter.
The fish and chips will be served with a green tartare sauce, “and with mushy peas you surely have to be right in the mood”, says chef Michael Brown.
Other options include P.J. O’Brien’s which started with a Big Irish Breakfast this morning including bubbles or Guinness for $25, leading into a set luncheon. The pub parties into the night with live Irish music, dancers and pipers.
The Adelaide Irish Clubopens 10am for all-day Irish breakfast and Irish breakfast rolls, or stew with music, Irish dancing and Adelaide Irish Pipe band. Free for members, $5 for non-members.
For something sweet, BTS Cafe is baking Slainte cupcakes - made with stout and finished with a Bailey’s frosting, all dressed up in green.
Outside of the city, The Norwood Hotel (Finn McCool’s) St Patty event is free with party music. All-day drink specials include imperial pints of Guinness and Kilkenny, $8, and Jameson’s, $7. Down south, the Beach Hotel in Seaford is serving up $10 shamrock cocktails, tap beers for $6.50 and will have a DJ on from 7pm.
