Review of The Langham hotel in Hong Kong's Tsim Sha Tsui district

Located in Hong Kong’s lively Tsim Sha Tsui district, The Langham is just the sort of oasis you crave while visiting Asia’s most eclectic and bustling cities.

In one of the most chic shopping areas in the city, The Langham is a 5-star luxury hotel that fills you with calmness and makes you want to stay longer.

The neighbourhood

The Langham could hardly be better positioned. Located on Kowloon, it is surrounded by the neon lights of some of the best known luxury brands in high-end retail, including Chanel, Prada, Cartier, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Bvlgari, Dior and Tiffany & Co. But that’s just the start of it. The hotel is also right next to the subway entrance to the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR and a 5-minute stroll to the Star Ferry Pier, where passengers can catch regular boats to Central and Wan Chai.

Upon arrival

A comfortable 30-minute ride in a taxi from Hong Kong International Airport, the left-handed turn into The Langham provides little clues of what’s inside. Greeted at the door by friendly staff, the hotel’s lobby is the first clue that this really is a grand place to stay. With high ceilings, marble floors and crystal chandeliers, it’s impossible not to get excited about the entrance. The check-in was smooth and as it was about 7pm when I arrived, the staff told me there were complimentary cocktails and canapes being served in the Langham Club, on the 11th floor.

Accessibility

Like all good hotels, the entry points all have wheelchair access, and there are multiple lifts to all the floors. The elevators are whisper quiet and quick, and activated only by room touch keys. The corridors on each floor are wide enough to avoid any awkward passes and are all tastefully carpeted.

The room

This was another pleasant surprise. Generous in size, my one bedroom suite was delightfully decorated in a distinctive 1920s theme, with black and white portraits on the walls and a relaxing sofa. The king-size Blissful bed was as opulent as it sounds and made for a perfect night’s sleep. The marble bathroom featured a deep bathtub with fragrant salts, yet it was the little additions that really stood out. One of the pillow slips was embroidered with the gold initials of my name. Before departing, it was washed, folded and packaged for me to keep as a souvenir. Each day when I returned to my room there was a bowl of fresh strawberries and bottled still water.

The club

One of the perks of staying in the executive rooms is getting access to the Langham Club, which includes premium privileges that make the stay even more memorable. The club is open for breakfast which includes an international buffet as well as a la carte offerings, including classic Eggs Benedict. In the afternoon, the club serves high tea with delicious sweets and savouries from the Butler’s Pantry, then at night, it’s those same delicious cocktails and canopies that I thought were just for arrival but were actually for each night.

Dining

The Langham has a selection of excellent restaurants but none that offer the same fine dining experience as T’ang Court, the hotel’s world famous three-Michelin starred eatery. One of just five authentic Cantonese restaurants to earn the highest rating in the food world, T’ang Court isn’t cheap but it’s a culinary delight worth taking. Elegantly designed in a cranberry-coloured room, the tables were spaced well apart to make everyone feel like they were dining privately.

I opted for the seven-course tasting menu, which included paired red and white wines from France, Chile and Spain. Each course was cooked to perfection and offered a wide variety of exotic flavours, from chilled sliced scallops with citrus honey to steamed sliced group with black mushrooms and Yunnan ham to lobster soup with shrimp dumplings and crispy rice. But my two inseparable favourites were the signature baked stuffed crab shell and the stir-fried diced wagyu beef.

Recreation

The Langham has a heated rooftop pool. It’s not Olympic-sized but it’s big enough for a casual dip or a few laps and there’s plenty of lounge chairs on the deck to work on the tan, though be warned, the hours of direct sunlight are limited by Hong Kong’s skyscrapers. As well as the swimming pool, there’s a spa and a modern gym for anyone wanting a good workout.

What's hot

Avenue of Stars, Hong Kong’s version of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, has a jaw-dropping view of the city skyline with a nightly laser show.

What’s not

Nestled between a stack of skyscrapers, don’t expect any unimpeded views from inside the hotel as even the high floor rooms mostly offer blocked sights of other nearby buildings.

The verdict: 9.5/10

Never underestimate the value of attention to detail and the most courtesy staff you’ll ever meet.

The nightly flexible rates start at $400 for a Superior City View room and $734 for an Executive Room.
