'Pull ya finger out ALDI, you were meant to have our back!'

Loyal fans of the budget supermarket are feeling let down after noticing a disappointing trend.

Grocery shopping is about to get super futuristic

In the highly competitive world of supermarkets, ALDI has long been the go-to for budget-conscious shoppers.

However, recent murmurs within ALDI Facebook groups suggest that the retailer might be losing its edge in the price war, especially against giants like Woolworths.

Ironically, people who were once part of the country-wide move away from the major retailers to the German chain are now making the switch back, citing lower prices and competitive reward programs as being the major drawcards.

"Get back to being the cheapest please!!!"

One member of the ALDI Mums group recently raised the issue after noticing a disappointing shift during her latest shopping trip.

She wrote: “So disappointed tonight... Woolworths beat ALDI prices... hate to say I walked out empty-handed and shopped at Woolworths.”

“Come on, ALDI... get back to being the cheapest, please!!!” she pleaded.

Another group member echoed this sentiment in the comments, saying, “Yep, I’ve noticed this too.”

And it quickly became apparent that this was not an isolated incident, as more voices in the group shared similar experiences.

“I’ve also changed back to Woolies myself,” said one shopper. “Just compared the prices and it seemed like a no-brainer.”

“I’ve gone back too because with their Everyday Extra program, I get points and 10% off my big shop once a month. I’m saving a lot compared to being at ALDI,” another ex-ALDI shopper added.

Someone else who switched back agreed, saying: “With my 10% off and the reward points earned, ALDI just isn’t worth it anymore.”

Issues of quality and product availability were also brought up, with one frustrated customer remarking, "The prices are up and the quality is getting lower and lower, not to mention the lack of stock at ALDI." This shopper agreed, "Exactly, they didn’t even have spaghetti the last time I went."

"The quality is so much better at Woolworths"

Others feel that the overall shopping experience at ALDI has deteriorated. “Buying Woolies brands and specials does come cheaper now compared to most things at ALDI. Not everything, but a good 90% of items. The quality is also sooo better,” shared another former fan.

“Yeah, have you seen all the posts in here about mould in food, rotting food and off food?” someone else replied.

“With my 10% discount, I do a big shop with a month plan in mind and lots of meat, and I have found Woolworths’ mince and steak are so much better than ALDI. We found ALDI meat has a lot of water in it and is lower grade. My hubby specifically said do not buy meat from ALDI ever again,” shared one mum.

"Pull 'ya finger out ALDI"

Yet another complaint came from a shopper who criticised ALDI, especially the stores in smaller towns.

"I shopped yesterday and was shocked at all the price rises and nothing on the shelves AGAIN. ALDI doesn’t care about our country towns - shelves are always empty, especially the cheaper items. I complained to the staff... they gave some excuse about changing products, but it's been going on since COVID. Pull ‘ya finger out ALDI.”

"The prices are shocking and not worth the hassle of doing a Woolies shop and then going to ALDI. I just shop at Woolies now," summed up another.

Meanwhile, one woman simply shared a photo of her trolley (above), saying, “$600 for this,” to show how far, or little, her money went.

It seems like the message from customers is clear — they are ready to shop elsewhere unless ALDI can truly have their back like it used to.
