Planning a trip on The Ghan? Make sure you read this first

This is considered to be one of the world's great train journeys. Here's what to know before you go.

I have often flown over Australia, gazing out the plane window at the vast expanse of the country below - the rugged landscape of ochre-red earth, adorned with sporadic tufts of hearty green vegetation like a canvas painted by an artist's brush, and wondered “what’s down there?”

That wonder was filled on the ‘old-fashioned’ transport solution of rail travel, on board the Ghan from Darwin through the centre of Australia to Adelaide. There is a lot to say for being on the ground in the middle of that land I often gazed down upon. Rail travel delivers a far richer experience beyond being among that scenery but around the people, smells, vibrations and sounds of a moving train. It’s travelling for real, at its ethereal best.

The Ghan is a great Australian rail journey that travels 2,979 kilometres between Darwin and Adelaide, stopping at Katherine, Alice Springs and Coober Pedy. Originating from the pioneering days of the late 19th century, when the ambitious dream of connecting the north and south of the vast continent was conceived, the Ghan emerged as a testament to human perseverance and ingenuity. Its name pays homage to the Afghan cameleers who traversed these arid landscapes, their camels carrying vital supplies to remote settlements. Over the years, the Ghan has evolved, embracing technological advancements while honouring its heritage, and today stands as an enduring symbol of Australia's spirit of exploration.

Embracing my spirit for exploration, I discovered there are some helpful tips to know when travelling on the Ghan journey. Here is what I learnt.

Choose your cabin class

Platinum Service Cabin on The Ghan.

The most important decision is what class of cabin to book. There are two classes - Ghan Gold Class and Ghan Platinum Class. Gold Twin offers two single bunks that convert into a lounge by day. Your cabin offers a private en-suite bathroom and a large window with your very own personal views. Solo travellers can save in Gold Single which provides a bed that converts into a seat by day and shared bathroom facilities. Platinum Class is the top-level and most luxurious option, featuring a double bed configured to deluxe lounge seating during the day and window views out both sides of the carriage. The cabins are almost twice the size of Gold Class and come with some extras like an in-cabin breakfast and access to the exclusive Ghan Platinum Club.

Pack wisely and embrace comfort

When preparing for this epic voyage, remember to pack light and practical. There is limited space in the cabins for big bags so try to keep it to a carry-on size or soft bag that can store in tight spaces. The Outback's arid climate calls for breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and comfortable walking shoes for off-train excursions. Don't forget to bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and a refillable water bottle. Keep a light jacket handy as the evenings do get cooler. While on board, casual attire is the norm, allowing you to relax and embrace the laid-back ambience.

Unveil off-train adventures

The Ghan Train offers an array of exhilarating off-train experiences that reveal the diverse wonders of Australia's Outback. Be sure to book some of these captivating excursions, such as the newly added Cutta Cutta Caves in Katherine, Standley Chasm Cultural Walk in Alice Springs and The Painted Hills & Lake Eyre Scenic Flight in Coober Pedy. There is a wide choice of included excursions with a couple of special excursions at an additional cost. These experiences will enrich your journey and create memories that last a lifetime.

Connect with Indigenous cultures

Australia's rich indigenous heritage is an integral part of the Ghan train experience. Engage with local Aboriginal communities to learn about their ancient traditions, Dreamtime stories, and unique connection to the land. These encounters provide invaluable insights into Australia's oldest living cultures.

Savour culinary delights

The dining car is one of the highlights of a journey on The Ghan.

Dining on board the Ghan Train in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant is a culinary adventure in itself as you relish exquisite dishes prepared by talented chefs. They use locally sourced ingredients and a delightful menu showcases the flavours of the region, complemented by a selection of fine wines. Indulge in a sundowner at the Outback Explorer Lounge and sample gourmet canapés while mingling with fellow travellers.

Take time to watch the scenery

While traversing the vast Australian Outback, take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of the journey itself. As you glide through ever-changing landscapes, embrace the sense of tranquillity and solitude that comes with train travel. While staring out the window as you lay in bed, sit in your cabin or mingle in the lounge, you will observe the subtle shifts in the scenery, from red desert dunes to lush green pastures, and marvel at the sheer magnitude of Australia's natural wonders.

Hot Tip: Splurge for the flight to Uluru

Uluru ... worth the splurge.

If there is one thing to splurge on with your Ghan journey, you can’t go past the Uluru Fixed Wing Scenic Flight. You will fly just south from Alice Springs in a small plane to Uluṟu, Kata Tjuṯa National Park. The flight takes in the spectacular outback scenery and vastness of Australia with a unique bird’s eye view before landing at Ayers Rock Airport and meeting a tour guide to commence your immersive experience of Uluṟu. Travelling around the base of Uluṟu by vehicle and seeing it from the air gives a unique perspective of this intriguing and mesmerising sight. This excursion books out fast so make sure you pre-book to avoid disappointment.
