A pair of youths who used a pole to attack defenceless ducks at a suburban lake have left nearby residents disturbed and angry over the act of cruelty.
Harrowing security camera footage obtained by The Advertiser shows one youth pulling the pole from the ground before swinging it aggressively at the ducks while his friend filmed him.
The incident occurred at about 11.45pm on Friday night at the Blakes Lake Reserve, at Blakeview.
It was at this time that nearby resident Sheree heard commotion coming from across the road.
She said she watched the whole incident unfold on her security cameras.
“They were pretty much pulverising these ducks and trying to spear them with these poles,” she said.
“I think one of the kids even tried to run over them with their scooter.”
Sheree said she was confused and went out the front to confront the teenagers.
“I just thought why on earth would you do something like that,” she said.
“I told them I saw what they’d done but they just walked off and didn’t say anything.”
She said the two boys could be clearly heard egging each other on.
“On the post on the community page, everyone’s concerned about it, people are upset and angry,” she said.
“We have a problem with petty youth crime and everyone’s always posting about it.”
She said she called police on this occasion.
“I’m not sure if they attended, they are probably dealing with much bigger issues than ducks,” she said.
“But these kids shouldn’t be doing this to innocent animals. Not to mention it’s a main feature of the whole suburb.”
She said the lake was a popular visiting spot for families and visitors.
“People with little kids go down and watch the ducks in the pond and the kids all have pet names for them,” she said.
“So it’s not surprising how much it has upset everyone.”
Police said they were notified about the incident, but were provided with “minimal description” of the offenders.
“There was minimal description of the persons involved and no further information provided at the time,” a police statement read.
Anyone who may have witnessed the disturbance is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
