Ian was sitting in his office when he heard his phone buzz.
Picking it up, he discovered an unread SMS from an unknown number, so he read the message before having a quick chuckle.
The Sydney-based executive took a screenshot of the message and uploaded it online, warning other parents to not fall for the seedy scam.

“Dropped my phone in the sink while doing the dishes”
Cybersecurity update,” he said to his LinkedIn audience. “I just got this, funniest phishing text any parent has ever received.”
“Hey dad,” the message began. “Dropped my phone in the sink while doing the dishes.”
“Its (sic) unresponsive this is my new number for now just text me here x.”
While there are obviously terrible spelling mistakes and grammatical errors that are hard to ignore, that wasn’t what gave the scammer away.
It was the fact that his child was completing chores at all.
“'Doing the dishes', yeah, for sure,” he laughed. “I wonder if I'm on some sort of dad database or if everyone got that one.”

“Kudos to the person who got a new phone and number so fast”
Other parents couldn’t help but laugh at the ridiculousness of the SMS scam.
“Haha!” someone laughed. “There is no way this is from my son or daughter...... that's for sure.”
“The other thing is the text doesn’t ask you to send money,” a father added. “A clear indication it’s not from one of your kids. Sounds legit to me.”
Another wondered why scammers thought a teenager would be able to recall their parents’ numbers without having a phone nearby.
“Kudos to the person who can get a new phone and new number so fast,” laughed another.
