When my sister named her baby after a bacteria, I couldn't help but laugh

"Now she's telling me I ruined her baby shower and everyone else loved the name."

Rules for visiting a newborn

A woman has taken to Reddit to explain how she got kicked out of her sister's baby shower for laughing at her chosen baby name.

Although it appeared to sound similar to a common bacteria, the sister insists that she made the choice to combine her and her husband's names.

But, it didn't exactly turn out how they'd planned.

"There were a few 'woo' noises and I just laughed"

Her husband's name is Sam and her name is Ella, so you can see where this is going.

The baby girl is going to be named, 'Samnella.'

The post explains: "I have a younger sister Ella. She got married to Sam last year in a small socially distanced wedding. We knew they'd want kids right away, and last Sunday was the baby shower. I knew she'd announce the gender and name at it, but Sam's mother arranged it so it was a surprise."

"[During the gender reveal] pink comes out and we all cheer. Ella goes, 'Okay name reveal' and that's when she pulls out a baby onesie with 'Samnella' on it."

"There were a few 'woo' [noises] but [then] dead silence, and I laughed, thinking it wasn't real. Then I said 'Salmonella like food poisoning?'" she continues.

Well, it didn't go down well to say the least.

"Sam's mum freaks out about how it's a beautiful name, Ella is screaming that I've ruined everything and the name was meant to signify the coming together of them. My own mother hissing that I should have kept my mouth shut, how the kid would probably go by Sammy.

"Not going to lie I left after that. I'm told the party went on but the mood was different."

The sister insists everyone loves the name

The sister stands by the name and insists that everyone loves it when they hear it, but the OP believes "they're just being nice" and are actually lying.

She concludes: "Family seems mixed on it, with a fair few agreeing Samnella does sound like salmonella, and caught off guard they'd have giggled too, but also a lot of 'well, it's her baby if she likes the name'."

"No child's name should sound like a bad chicken curry"

Commenters on the post weighed in on the situation and didn't hold back on giving their thoughts about the name.

"All I could think of is that poor kid in biology class in the future. We used to get teased if a character from an English lesson or an example sentence for grammar had our name in it. The kid is named after a disease!" one top comment read.

Another said: "Surely a wind-up? If not, no child's name should sound like a bad chicken curry."

Then a third added: "You are doing them a service. Now they’ll hopefully be embarrassed out of using that awful name."

"Your future niece will thank you for at least trying to save her from that abomination of a name," a fourth concluded.
