We want to name our baby after a new Disney princess but we're worried too

"Most of the Disney heroine names are usable. There are so many Anna’s, Jasmine’s, Ariel’s, Mirabel’s, in the world," the parents-to-be were reassured.

'Disney adult' shares magical baby name

One of the most enjoyable decisions you'll make while preparing for your bundle of joy to arrive is choosing the perfect name

For one couple, that decision-making process was impacted after they discovered their chosen name was actually the name of a Disney princess.

The father, unsure what to do, took to an advice forum looking for answers.

"My wife is due in a couple of months with our first child, a baby girl. We were set on the name 'Asha' but hadn’t told anyone yet," he began the post, which now has over 273 comments on it.

"Oh, you named your baby after a Disney princess?"

Asha is a popular Indian girl's name that comes from the Sanskrit word for 'hope' or 'desire'.

He continued, "But we just saw a commercial for an upcoming Disney movie 'Wish' where the main character's name is Asha."

He then admitted that he thought the timing was 'a bit annoying' and he's already predicting the commentary down the line from friends and family.

"They'll say to us, 'Oh you named your baby after a Disney princess' - but I’m more so thinking about our baby girl down the road and whether people would tease her, etc."

He concluded his post by asking, "Am I overthinking this? Does anyone have any experience with relatively uncommon names that become popularised in the media?"

According to the Disney website, the movie Wish will be released on Boxing Day and is helmed by the Oscar-winning director of Frozen, Chris Buck.

It's about a girl named Asha who is a "sharp-witted idealist" who makes a wish that is 'so powerful' it is answered by a cosmic force.

"I don't think it’ll be as big a deal as you think"

In the comments, people basically told the dad-to-be that he was getting ahead of himself.

"Asha is quite a common name in India and for people of Indian descent. I wouldn’t worry too much about the Disney movie, which may or not be popular," the top comment read.

Another added, "Yes, there is a famous Bollywood singer named Asha Bhosle. I would think of her before any new Disney character."

Someone else also pointed out that the name made them think about the song 'Brimful of Asha' first, which is actually about the singer Asha Bhosle.

Then this person pointed out, "I don’t think most of the Disney heroine names are unusable (except Rapunzel/Cinderella/Snow White). There are so many Anna’s, Jasmine’s, Ariel’s, Mirabel’s, etc. in the world.

"Elsa is the only one that might get a stronger connection with the movie but even that isn’t unusable. Wish will probably not be a Frozen-level hit and even if by chance it does, it’s a very positive connotation, like naming your child Zelda has a connotation with the Legend of Zelda but Zelda is a strong kind princess. Asha is a beautiful cultural name."

"Just say you picked it before the movie came out"

Then this mum with first-hand experience weighed in, saying, "My daughter's name is super similar to Moana, more in sound than anything. People don’t say we named her after the movie.

"Honestly just say you guys picked it before the movie came out and leave it at that. I don't think it’ll be as big a deal as you think."

Another user pointed, out, "Even if the movie is a HUGE hit (which isn’t super likely) the fuss over the name would die down by high school."

"I have a friend in her thirties named Asha (and I think it’s really pretty.) Disney has kind of monopolised a lot of names, but I think it passes honestly. There are far worse things than being named after a Disney Princess," remarked a different reader.

Finally, someone else gave their two cents, saying, "It is a nice name, but I do see OP’s point. I wouldn’t want to name my kid Elsa, for the same reason. But obviously, there’s no way of knowing if this film will be popular or if the name will become more common."
