Parents’ fury as ‘whistleblower’ son expelled over school ‘rape list’

The family of a Year 12 student expelled over a so-called student “rape list” say their son has been wrongly punished for being a “whistleblower”.

PM calls for ‘debate’ about social media content that promotes violence

The family of a Year 12 Mueller College boy expelled over a so-called student “rape list” have said their son has been wrongly punished for being a “whistleblower”.

The “vile and offensive” list, revealed this week by The Courier-Mail, was compiled by a group of six male students at the Moreton Bay school, then shared to social media. In the post, the boys reportedly deemed eight senior students, including those with learning disabilities and special needs, “unrapeable”.

A Queensland Police spokesperson confirmed to news.com.au the matter was reported to them on October 9, 2024. Investigations by authorities are ongoing.

In a letter to parents on October 17, head of college Paul Valese said the school immediately investigated and reported the matter to authorities.

“The college took immediate steps to remove students who either authored the content or subsequently shared it,” Mr Valese wrote.

“I stand by my decision to immediately remove these students from the community.”

Chris and Lori Glover disagree. Speaking to The Sunday-Mail, the couple said their 17-year-old son had been penalised not for partaking in the list’s creation, but for bringing it to the school’s attention in the first place.

The teen took screenshots of the list – which had been sent to him, and which he’d then sent to a private groupchat – to leaders at the school, only to be expelled. He claimed only he, the student who published the list, and one other whistleblower were expelled.

“It would have been acceptable for the school to say, ‘hey mate, we’re pleased you’ve come to us, but sharing the list in a group chat is a clunky way to go about it’,” Ms Glover said.

“Instead, he’s been expelled for being a whistleblower.”

Mr Glover said their son “has basically been put in the same category as the students who wrote the list and this is what infuriates us”.

Mr Valese said in his message to parents that “a strong conviction in protecting our young people drives my firm decisions’.

“These students are no longer part of the Mueller community, with their final day as a student on campus being the day we received the report,” Mr Varese wrote.

He added that he was “grieved” by the incident, which he said took place outside school hours.

“I am grieved for our amazing Year 12 students who want to celebrate their 13 years of schooling in a positive way with their friends.”
