‘I use my poo as fertiliser - some say it’s gross but I think it’s brilliant’

“The true cheapskate looks for the opportunity [to cut costs] every chance and every place that they can get,” Goldy says in the wacky video.

Woman makes fertiliser out of her own poop

If you’ve ever wanted to save some extra cash on your weekly shopping bills, one woman may have the perfect solution.

Ok, maybe not perfect, but it is a solution.

Former American wrestler-turned-TV personality Goldy Locks said she spends just USD$84 (AUD$124) monthly on her grocery bills.

How she does do it, you may ask? Composting - her own poo

“I made this fertiliser from my own poop”

In a new episode of TLC’s Extreme Cheapskates, Goldy showed a family how they could reduce spending by encouraging a more natural approach to food.

“You could grow your own food,” she began. “The true cheapskate looks for the opportunity [to cut costs] every chance and every place that they can get,” she said.

The TV show presented a family who was spending an exorbitant amount on groceries each month, surpassing their budget every time.

“This is my gift to you,” Goldy said, showing the family two wheelbarrows of brown mulch.

But this wasn’t compost that you could get “from a hardware store,” she warned. “I make it from my own poop.”

The “brilliant” way to turn “waste into resources”

After instructing the family to smell the substance, she gave them tips for making their own at home.

“[First] dump kitchen scraps,” she began. “Then you are going to layer it with some of your human poo, and in between each time you poo, you throw in leaves scrunched up or sawdust and it covers the smell.”

The family went so far as to touch the compost, reaching out to feel the mixture in their hands.

“In a year, it will have dissolved into the most incredible soil,” Goldy promised. “You’ve turned waste into resources - absolutely brilliant.”

But the family wasn’t so convinced.

“I can understand cow or horse [poo], but I don’t think I can handle human,” the father confessed. “It’s just gross!”

“Being thrifty is great, but this is just nasty!”

It wasn’t just the family who were put off by the concept. Fans of the show quickly pointed out how “nasty” the solution was, even if it meant saving money.

“I've seen some pretty gross [things] in my life, but that's the most disgusting,” wrote one shocked person.

“Being thrifty is great, but fertilising the garden with your personal waste is just nasty,” said another.

“Ok, I get it, but at the same time, that’s disgusting,” someone added.

“I wonder if she sells produce at the farmer's market and advertises it as organic?” a fan joked.

But some argued that once you get past the “disgusting” nature of it, the solution is quite effective.

“This why I love poo,” said one. “It is so incredibly versatile and has so many purposes!”
