'Arr, me hearties': My parents made up my name, it sounds like a pirate

An 18-year-old has asked the internet for thoughts on her unique moniker... and people didn't hold back.

Baby Name MOURNING The grief of not being able to use the name you love

"I literally hate my name and I think it's cringe," an 18-year-old began a now-viral Reddit thread about her unique name

The woman shared that her name is 'Arrisa' before explaining her parents' reasoning behind the decision.

"My dad wanted to name me Marrisa, but my mum wanted to remove the 'M' to make it more unique," she said.

"Like the pirate spelling"

She then asked commenters their thoughts on the name... and they did not hold back.

"It should have two S’s, not two Rs. Marissa (standard spelling), Arissa. It’s not bad that way," one pointed out.

Another user joked: "It is kinda like the pirate spelling."

A third agreed, writing: "What's a pirate's favourite letter? Arrrr!"

"You should be comfortable in your own skin"

However, some reassured her it wasn't as bad as she thought.

"No one saying go by Ari/Arri? Arri is actually pretty cool," one Redditor wrote.

Another told the teen: "The heart of the issue is YOUR comfort level. You should be comfortable in your own skin, with your name, with who you are.

"If you don't like your name, pick a new name that you just love and that clicks with you. Go down to the courthouse and fill out the change of name paperwork. I did, when I was 18. I love the name I have now, I have never, not for a second, hand a single regret about doing it. Only that I could not afford to do it sooner."

Another unique baby name

It comes after we reported on another mum giving her baby a very unique name last week.

The mum, Kerry, named her daughter Riley Coyote - a play on the name of the cartoon character Wile E. Coyote.

"Yes, I named her after a wild dog," the mum said unapologetically to The Sun.

"People think that’s crazy. Some people are shocked, others troll me. I don't care, I love the name.

"Riley Coyote is the perfect name for my little girl. It’s original, it’s unusual, and you will never meet another child called the same."
