‘Must-have’: Kmart’s brilliant mid-century homewares dupe for $300 item

The budget $49 version is so affordable, people experimenting with gorgeous DIY hacks.

“Yessss love!” was a comment from one of TikTokker Tiffany Donaldson’s followers.

The DIY expert had taken Kmart’s $49 Gigi Floor Lamp and spraypainted the gold stand matte black.

The floor lamp has gone viral because it’s nearly identical to two mid-century style lamps at upmarket furniture stores.

Lifely’s Achie Mid-Century Floor Lamp has a slightly more pronounced curve than the Kmart dupe and is made of wood. The base is also a different shape, but customers will pay six times the Kmart price for the benefit of those design features.

Meanwhile the Replica Mads Caprani Floor Light is almost $500.

The upmarket lamps are the current “must-have” décor elements, according to contemporary interior designers.

Kmart designer floor lamp dupe sells for fraction of the price

The Gigi Lamp cuts an elegant silhouette with a faux marble base, a curved gold metal stand and a white, wide cone lamp shade with a fan-fold texture.

It’s understated but has just enough design details to make it special.

The lamp has been trending on social media, with some users excited to receive their orders and others devastated at missing out.

“Oh my! I just ordered it. Chef’s kiss, Kmart,” one person said.

“Can’t find it anywhere. Sold out online and none of the stores have any,” said another.

DIY hack on Kmart Gigi Lamp

While the original lamps come with gold bases, followers loved Tiffany’s DIY project.

“When you love the lamp but the colour isn’t for you, paint it,” Tiffany captioned a video on TikTok.

The mum-of-two unboxed the gold lamp, removed the shade and took a few seconds to spray paint the stand black.

In the comments, Tiffany explained that she painted the lamp using Kmart chalk paint.

She then showed off her new black lamp in a cosy spot in what looks like a home office.  

“As soon as I saw this I thought, ‘I’d spray paint that black’. I love the result,” one person said.

“Yesss been waiting to see this painted black,” said another person.

“I’m waiting for it to come to our local store,” a third person wrote. “I’ve literally just changed my lounge room around and she’s perfect!”
