Mum's urgent warning after Kmart toy leaves her toddler with chemical burns

"I have never heard her scream like that before," the woman said about her 18-month-old who was hospitalised after acid from a fidget spinner leaked onto her.

A Queensland mum has highlighted the dangers of a popular Kmart fidget toy after her toddler and primary schooler were left with chemical burns after playing with it.

Jessie Tidyman recalled the panic that set in after she heard her 18-month-old scream while taking a bath with her older six-year-old sister.

"I heard this awful scream, I have never heard her scream like that before," says Jessie.

Speaking to Today, she explained that the fluid inside the $9 Glitter Sensory Shaker they were playing with had leaked onto both of the girls' skin.

Jessie then tried to pull her toddler out of the bath to settle her but she wouldn't settle. Her eldest daughter then explained that the toy had somehow opened and the liquid had come out.

Jessie remembers the distinct "chemical smell" coming from the fidget shaker and immediately called the poisons helpline who directed her to call an ambulance.

"When the ambulance officer got there she said 'It looks like a burn', so we went to the hospital and the doctors and nurses told us 'Your daughter has first-degree burns," says Jessie.

They then tried to source the ingredients list for the toy but couldn't find it anywhere online or on the toy.

However, after some testing, the doctors found that it contained phosphate acid.

'They had first-degree burns from a fidget toy'

After suffering from first-degree burns, her daughters are thankfully now on the mend.

"My 18-month-old is healing really well, she doesn't like bath time at the moment but we'll get there," Jessie said, adding that her eldest is also recovering but her legs are currently peeling.

"Her skin is flaking off similar to a really, really bad sunburn, but the doctors said that would happen."

'I'd hate to think what would have happened if my daughter had drunk it'

Jessie is still in disbelief that a children's toy contained something so toxic and has urged Kmart to take the product off the shelf.

"They should also get it tested or at least add an ingredient list, that way if a kid were to swallow it, it's as simple as looking up online and seeing the list.

"I'd hate to think what would have happened if my daughter had drunk it."

A Kmart spokesperson responded to Jessie's concerns with a statement saying, "At Kmart, the safety of our customers and team is our number one priority.

"We are really concerned to hear about this incident and are taking this report extremely seriously and are looking into this customer's experience with our quality team.

"We encourage this customer to reach out to us directly via our customer service team so that we can begin a proper investigation and offer our support."
