Harry and Meghan's driver speaks out

The taxi driver, who was driving the couple and Meghan's mother Doria during the alleged pursuit, has now opened up about their car ride. And as it turns out, it wasn't really as bad as we've been led to believe.

In an interview with The Washington Post after the chase made headlines around the globe, taxi driver Sukhcharn Singh, recalled details about his trip with Harry, his wife and mother-in-law.

"They kept following us and were coming next to the car," he shared with the publication, telling reporters that the trip waved him down on the street before the alleged chase.

"They took pictures as we stopped and were filming us."

And while it was a little different to a regular ride with non-celeb passengers, not once did he feel it was unsafe for anyone in the vehicle.

"I don't think I would call it a chase. I never felt like I was in danger," he claimed.

"It wasn't like a car chase in a movie. They were quiet and seemed scared but it's New York — it's safe."

Keen for a little more than his five minutes of fame, the driver also appeared on Piers Morgan's show to share more about their pursuit.

"[They] seemed very nervous," he admitted.

"As we went a block, we were blocked by a trash truck, and then all of a sudden, paparazzi just came out of nowhere and flashes just went off."

A "near catastrophic" car chase

A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan released a statement claiming the couple and Doria were involved in a "near catastrophic" car chase with hungry photographers following the Ms. Foundation's Women of Vision Awards at Ziegfeld Ballroom in Manhattan.

"Last night, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms. Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi. This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers," the spokesperson said.

"While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone's safety. Dissemination of these images, given the ways in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous to all in involved."

While Harry and his loved ones were obviously terrified during the ordeal, a photographer has also reached out to People magazine to share their side of the story.

"Nobody got a ticket or arrested... I don't see how it was near catastrophic other than crazy hyperbole," they said.
