‘Like a theme park on steroids’: This hidden island gem is the hands-off holiday mum needs

If you've been yearning for an overseas holiday where everyone can kick back and have fun together, this is it. 

Tucked away in the heart of Singapore, lies a secluded trove perfect for families seeking a laid-back escape. If you've been yearning for a holiday where everyone can kick back and have fun together, this is it. 

Before dusting off my passport, I sought advice from friends and family who were familiar with Singapore's bustling streets - being the very popular stopover destination it is. I’d already heard all about the infamous Jewel Changi Airport waterfall and knew to expect hot temperatures - PACK LINEN. 

Sentosa however, was lesser known. Clean, friendly, safe, and architecturally stunning, it sets the bar high for urban living in Asia. Upon arrival, I compared the artificial oasis to a giant Easter Show - that is if Sydney Showground was by the water and there was a stunning hanging bridge leading to the showbag tent. There’s a food truck dotting every corner, frequent firework shows, and a Disneyland-inspired train that stops at every attraction. 

An ex-colleague of mine likened the lush greenery to scenes from Jurassic Park, and my partner felt like he’d been dropped off at Koopa Troopa Beach. Note: he made it his mission to beat everyone’s Hyperdrive scores before we left so take his Mario Kart -themed review with a grain of salt.

She’s a golfer, she's a track star

From the moment you step onto this idyllic island, you’re greeted with a plethora of activities. Dash around a two-storey indoor track in battle karts shooting fake missiles, simulate jumping out of a plane at iFly, and Resorts World is just a hop, skip, and a jump away. You can dump the rascals and enjoy some much-needed ‘me time’ at one of the many nearby rooftop pools while the kids zip down waterslides and challenge each other to mini-golf tournaments. 

If you’re in the mood to hang out with some Hollywood legends, Madame Tussauds awaits, boasting the world's only boat ride within its premises, Fort Siloso’s war museum is a hotspot for history buffs, and if like me, you’re dreading the same tired displays at Vivid Sydney, as the sun sets, Sentosa’s brand new Sensoryscape show comes to life, bathing the island in a kaleidoscope of colours and melodies.

While the nightlife may not rival that of larger cities, augmented reality and captivating light art installations set you up for a dazzling walk that enhances all your senses. There’s even an app so you can follow a digital map around and cross off checkpoints like a treasure map. 

When it's time to unwind, The Outpost Hotel offers luxury with a capital L as an adults-only retreat. Guests of The Outpost Hotel can either access the Sky Pool at Level 7, or the Pool Deck which includes a lazy river where kids can doughnut race and a swim-up bar for parents to release that breath they’ve been holding since two became three (to make room for that cocktail in hand of course). I might even go as far as to say it’s more lavish than the Four Seasons Maui from The White Lotus. 

The Pool Deck is a shared amenity for guests staying at the cluster of hotels under Far East Hospitality at Sentosa – The Barracks Hotel, Oasia Resort Sentosa, The Outpost Hotel and Village Hotel Sentosa.

Just make sure you don’t forget to indulge in the sumptuous breakfast buffet, it’s sure to please even the pickiest eaters.

I can’t stress enough that Singapore is much more than just a playground for young thrill-seekers, and I would highly recommend exploring beyond Sentosa. The Cable Car ride isn't just a means of transportation between Mount Faber and Harbourfront - it's a stunning adventure in itself where you can take in iconic landmarks from a bird's eye perspective. Trains and buses are also super easy to navigate however if you’re not a fan of heights.

The central city boasts a rich tapestry of experiences, from the vibrant energy of Haji Lane, with its cool retail shophouses, graffiti-adorned buildings, and eclectic mix of bars, cafes, and breweries, to Tiong Bahru Market where those craving a taste of local delights can try authentic, wallet-friendly dishes and refreshing sugar cane drinks.

I ran out of time to visit the highly recommended Botanic Gardens and Marina Bay Sands, so I guess we’ll just have to return for the next F1 Grand Prix. Go Piastri!

What you need to know before visiting Singapore

Before you jet off, take some time to brush up on your knowledge: Jaywalking and littering are considered major crimes, so leave your rebellious streak at home (or at least until you hit the beach clubs).

Book a shower room at the airport: With eight hours of travel back to Sydney (longer if you don’t fly direct with Singapore Airlines), it’s the best self-care hack for a short trip. You’ll touch down feeling just as refreshed as when you left - with a side of resentment for your old life. 

It’s hot: That’s the hot tip - bring sunscreen and a hat.
