To the public watching royal events from the sidelines, he's the cheeky little royal who always manages to keep his mother Princess Catherine and father Prince William on his toes.

But Prince Louis actually has an adorable nickname given to him by his mother, it was overheard at his first royal engagement following King Charles' coronation.

Kate's sweet nickname for Louis

Prince Louis joined his two older siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, at his first royal engagement visiting the 3rd Upton Scout Group in Slough just two days after King Charles' coronation.

While playing around and toasting marshmallows, his mother was overheard referring to him as "Lou Bug" - an adorable nickname reportedly given to him by his immediate family.

"Pop that in the fire, Lou Bug," the Princess of Wales was heard saying.

It's not the only nickname we know that is given to a royal family member. It has been reported that Kate also calls Princess Charlotte "Lottie" and "Poppet" and Prince George also calls his dad "Pops."

Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte steal the show at coronation

It's been a big few days for the youngest royals. During the King's coronation, all eyes were on his grandson Louis, hoping the five-year-old prince would be up to his usual antics.

Compared to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, where Louis stuck his tongue out at his mum and shushed her, the little boy was pretty sedate at the coronation.

He held big sister Charlotte’s hand and didn’t do much more than yawn and share the occasional whisper in Westminster Abbey during his grandpa’s long coronation ceremony.

But by the time the Buckingham Palace balcony appearances rolled around following the ceremony, Louis was once again in fine form.

He pointed at the crowds, talking excitedly to his mum at the sights he spotted.

And then there was Louis’ wave, which some are saying should replace the famous cupping, wrist-twist motion invented by Queen Elizabeth.
