How to save money on bananas

Mason and Mai a.k.a @savingforboba often share their nifty budget tips online, but their latest video takes thriftiness to a whole new level.

In a clip that's been viewed over a million times, Mai films Mason peeling a banana in the fruit section of Woolworths.

He then puts it in a plastic bag, goes to the self-checkout and weighs it on the scale without the peel on. The total came to just 51 cents.

"How my frugal boyfriend saves money on his bananas," Mai wrote over the clip.

"Marry him, he's going to be a millionaire"

Despite Mai being mortified about his actions, many commenters praised Mason for his idea, with one saying "he's a keeper."

Another said: "He's a genius. You're paying to eat the banana and not the peel."

Someone else added: "Marry him! He's going to be a millionaire."

Then this person said that their mum "even snaps the broccoli stalk off because she's not eating it."

"I've seen someone take the stalks off grapes and the skin off onions too," wrote another woman.

"Break up with him"

But others frowned upon the practice, saying it was an act of "theft."

"Break up with him," urged one TikToker.

A different viewer mocked, "doing all that to save 25 cents."

"This is a massive red flag," claimed someone else.

"Penny pincher, he might as well ditch the bag when weighing it too," wrote a fourth.

"Times are tough"

In another one of the couple's videos, Mason shows off his hack to save money on soft drinks.

He goes to a Subway (which do unlimited drink refills) and fills up a large cup a few times.

He then pours the drink into a bigger soft drink bottle he's brought with him using a funnel. Talk about dedication!

"Times are tough," the caption reads.
