‘I built a huge bed so my kids wouldn’t push me out with their stone cold feet’

The viral video shows how a dad living the co-sleeping nightmare of getting pushed to a “tiny space at the edge of the bed” DIYs an incredible oversized bed.

He gets pushed to the outer edge of his own bed every night by co-sleeping children.

They kick him in the back and tuck their cold feet under his torso while they’re sleeping.

Alex Dodman is Every Dad.

And Alex Dodman is also clever.

Living by the wisdom, if you can’t beat’em, join’em, Alex decided to build the biggest family bed his bedroom would allow for.

“If you’ve got tiny humans, you know what it’s like,” he narrated the viral TikTok.

“They end up taking over your bed, then booting you to the edge with their stone cold feet.

“Now tiny human number two has arrived, and realising he might want to try to jump in too when he’s bigger, I decided to try and protect my tiny spot on the edge of the bed.”

Dad builds huge bed for co-sleeping kids

If he didn’t make the bed, Alex knows what would have happened, because it happens in homes around the world: the kids snuggle up with mum while dad gets kicked out.

He ends up in one of three places: the floor, the sofa or one of the kids’ tiny beds.

“So I don’t end up on the f**king floor for the next years… the only thing. I could think of to do was build a stupidly oversized bed,” he said.

Alex showed his process, building frames and trying to source a big enough mattress.

Unable to find anything large enough, he decided to make the bed frame the size of two queen-sized mattresses and added a lip to the frame to help keep the mattresses pushed tightly together.

The resulting bed was indeed “stupidly oversized”: three metres wide. That’s plenty of space for kids to sleep diagonally or horizontally and for dad to stay far far away from their “stone cold feet”.

Followers loved the DIY.

“This is honestly so impressive,” one person said.

“I adore that you did all that so you can sleep like a pack at night,” said another.

One dad shared a similar experience.

“We have three kids – a set of twins and we bought our first house last year,” he said. “We were gifted an emperor mattress. Had to get a bed made to fit! It’s two metres by two metres. Lads building it wouldn’t believe the mattress size. ”
