Human Nature brothers Andrew and Michael Tierney reveal travel secrets

As half of pop group Human Nature, brothers Andrew and Michael Tierney are kept on the move with their music.

Top 10 countries travellers want to return to

Between touring with Human Nature and family holidays, Andrew and Michael Tierney have clocked up hundreds of trips around the world.

MICHAEL

Where do you live?

Henderson, Nevada.

How many trips have you taken together?

Probably hundreds over the years, from vacations with our family growing up to tours with Human Nature, and now taking trips with our families.

What was your most memorable trip together and why?

The last few years we’ve taken a trip to Laguna Beach, California, with our families. It’s been amazing to watch our girls grow up enjoying that time on the beach together and taking in the California beach sunsets.

How does Andrew pack?

Andrew tends to pack well to leave, but when he arrives in a hotel room it looks like instant chaos. Things get strewn all over the room.

What makes him a good travel buddy?

We have similar tastes in food so like to try something good that’s local to where we are. He’s just easy to chat to about anything that’s going on.

Do your travel personas align or differ?

We’re both happy to get out and explore somewhere, happy to walk around or try to navigate the public transport in a new city. Andrew loves to be up at the gym early, which I’m not as keen on all the time

How do you take time out on the trip (from each other)?

By retreating to our rooms and binge-watching something on Netflix. It’s a nice way to just chill at the end of a day.

How do you cope with any travel frictions?

The only real friction is the countdown to when Andrew loses his first “thing” of the trip. You know it’s coming at some point.

What’s on your travel bucket-list?

London for Christmas with our families this year, with some other cities in Europe to add in. It’s going to be great fun.

Who’s in charge of the itinerary?

I love to look up restaurants and the best coffee places to try, great things to see. But I’m happy to go along with what others would like to do also.

ANDREW

Where do you live?

Las Vegas

How many trips have you taken together?

I have lost count. We have travelled together as bandmates, song-writing partners, young kids and now with our super-close families. I’d have to say hundreds of trips in our lifetime so far.

Your most memorable trip together and why?

For a landmark birthday of mine this year our families went together to New York to celebrate. It was my first summer trip in New York and we did everything – walked Brooklyn Bridge, went to Broadway shows, ate at unique places. We had the best time.

How does Michael pack?

He usually packs light. His main suitcase, however, has a “very” masculine rose-gold zipper which we all like to point out.

What makes him a good travel buddy?

We have very similar food and activity interests so it’s easy to choose an activity or restaurant we’d both be keen to do.

Do your travel personas align or differ?

Mike loves to look up the map and I’m always keen for someone else to do that, so it works perfectly.

How do you take time out on the trip (from each other)?

When it’s just the two of us travelling, we tend to do everything together. When it’s with our families, my wife and I will be up early on a walk or workout, which is usually some nice alone time, too.

How do you cope with any travel frictions?

Mike doesn’t seem to annoy me. Maybe I annoy him? I’m always losing things – laptop left in plane seat pocket, passport lost in reclining seat, and phone chargers left plugged into hotel walls.

What’s on your travel bucket-list?

We have a trip to Australia for work and then a family vacation to London and Paris for Christmas this year. I feel super-grateful that we can travel and enjoy it with our family.

Who’s in charge of the itinerary?

We share it. When we travel with the families Mike likes to follow the map, our wives set the agenda and I tag along.
