A Townsville woman said she thought she’d die alone after her own dog tore her arm off in a shocking attack — but, incredibly, she doesn’t blame the pet.

Annmarie Walters, 34, was at home in Garbutt on October 11 when a neighbour reportedly kicked her door, sending her dog, Buddy, into a frenzy.

“My front door was still broken, so I knew I had to hold him back,” she said via the Townsville Bulletin.

But Buddy bit down on her left arm, and when she shouted, he let go.

Moments later, something outside triggered Buddy again. He locked onto her right arm, and the situation spiralled.

“I thought, ‘At least I can talk him out of it,’” Annmarie said, trying to stay calm. But when another neighbour tossed a knife over the fence to help, it set Buddy off.

“The knife hit, and Buddy snapped,” she said.

The dog pulled backward, and her arm was gone.

Garbutt resident Annmarie Walters, 34, has been identified as the victim of the dog attack.

Bleeding out in her front yard, she managed to kick off her shoes, drag her phone close and call triple-0.

As she waited, she said she panicked and thought she was going to “die here alone”.

When help arrived, police entered the home and had to shoot Buddy.

“They found my arm, but it was too damaged to reattach,” she said, revealing that she lost so much blood she “died twice” on the operating table.

Despite everything, she doesn’t blame her pooch, attributing his reaction to poor breeding and human error.

Now home with her other dog, Tilly, Annmarie is adjusting to life without her arm — and without Buddy.

“He guarded his property, and it cost him his life … He’s an animal. Animals snap,” she explained, adding that she bought Buddy from a backyard breeder, where she believes the issues began.

“If I hadn’t been able to buy him from a backyard breeder, this might never have happened.

“There wasn’t a single sign that morning. He was just sitting there like a normal, happy dog, and boom.”
