Your date is judging your interior design tastes, new survey says

A NEW survey has revealed how your home can turn off a potential date. Spoiler alert: It’s bad news if you love motivational quotes.

NEED a good reason to splash out on some new homewares? We’re here to help.

A new survey has found 71 per cent of singles would dump their date due to a bad living space, according to results from online dating site EliteSingles.

Twenty per cent of the 1,500 singles surveyed said they had stopped dating someone because of their unimpressive pad, and 51 per cent said they would be prepared to do the same.

Almost one third said it was possible to be attracted to a partner based on their living space.

The top three turns off for men were motivational quotes, stuffed animals and “too many cosmetics”.

The top three no-gos for women were an empty-looking apartment or house, video game consoles on display and “ugly colours”.

The majority of those surveyed (84 per cent) said they tidy their house before a date arrives.

The bathroom was voted the most important thing to clean (42 per cent) and just 5 per cent of respondents said changing the sheets was the first priority before a first date.

The most popular decor styles were ‘glamour’ — meaning metallic accents, rich textures and deep colours — and ‘country’ — so natural fabrics, thick stripes and French blues.

These are the top ten items to have in your home if you want to impress a date:

1. Well-equipped kitchen

2. Family pictures

3. Artworks

4. Well-stocked bookshelves

5. Pets

6. Travel paraphernalia

7. Musical instruments

8. Designer furniture

9. Vintage furniture

10. Handmade items
