LA-based Seth Casteel is an award-winning pet photographer living the dream.

First created by chance, his wonderful series of underwater dog photographs have brought him worldwide attention, entertaining millions of animal lovers.

Proud parent of (non-swimming) mini-labradoodle Nala and Norwich Terrie Fritz, Casteel’s unique process involves an underwater housing to take his camera into a pool, then training each dog to slowly fetch balls deeper and deeper into the water. When the dog becomes confident enough to plunge its entire body into the pool, the magic happens.

How did Underwater Dogs come about?

“I was photographing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Buster back in 2010 in his backyard in California. The photo shoot was meant to be “On-land”, but Buster decided he would rather be in the pool. As I watched him dive in over and over again chasing his favorite mini tennis ball, I thought, “What does he look like under there!!”. I left, bought a little point-and-shoot underwater camera, zipped back and jumped in. The resulting photos were the beginning of the series of Underwater Dogs.”

Since being widely shared across the web, Casteel’s unique photos have been viewed over 150 million times. He says that he has now photographed over 300 dogs.

Now Casteel pays tribute to canine vigor and determination with a picture book companion to New York Times bestseller Underwater Dogs designed especially for kids.

“We were finding that kids everywhere were responding to these pictures, but that some of the images could be a little intimidating. So we thought let’s do a really fun, family friendly version, incorporating rhyming text.
