Warning: there's a chance this article will make you want to rip up your floorboards.

A woman in the US was renovating her home when she discovered a stash of old postcards from the early 1900s hidden beneath the floor.

Amanda Reddy only bought the house in South Minneapolis a few months ago and has been working on it ever since.

But the stressful reno suddenly became far more interesting when Reddy made her vintage discovery.

From 1909: Hello Mayme. I haven't forgot and shall return some of your dear cards. Am having a dandy time, going to the circus to-night. (Can't read this part.) but it's dandy here. Answer soon. My address is 17 Charles Street, Sioux City Iowa. Lennie (or Dennie). Photo: Amanda Reddy

"I popped off the first baseboard in the kitchen and to my surprise there were personal items behind it," Reddy wrote on her blog.

"And to my even bigger surprise, they were over 100 years old! What a wonderful and interesting way to connect with a new home."

The postcards appear to be addressed to Mayme Berneck, who was one of the original owners of the house when it was built in 1910.

It's not known why the correspondence was hidden, but some of the postcards date back to 1907, meaning they were obviously important enough to Berneck to bring them with her when she moved to her new home.

In an email to news.com.au, Reddy said she had tracked down Mayme Berneck's grandchildren who currently live in California and she plans to contact them soon.

"Hopefully they find it interesting and possibly even amusing that it has gotten media attention," Reddy wrote.

"I've been asked a lot if I'm going to give the postcards to the family. Someone who commented on my blog suggested that I give them the cards, but ask if I can keep one to frame and leave with the house. I think that was a great idea, and that's what I'll do!"

Reddy would also like for the future owners of the house to share in the excitement of making a similar discovery if they ever decide to renovate, so she's devised a plan.

"I'm also thinking of hiding my own little time capsule behind the baseboard when I put it back up, and include photocopies of Mayme's cards. So maybe 100 years from now, someone can get a glimpse into 200 years before them," Reddy wrote.
