EVEN though most of us have been basking in an extended summer, you can be sure those cold days will be knocking on the door pretty soon.
Why not make the most of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend to get your home ship-shape for the inevitable drop in temperature? Here are five easy DIY projects to keep your home cosy this winter:
1. Install window coverings
If you thought curtains were a bit off trend, think again! Curtains are right on trend, and have never really gone out of fashion. The right curtains can not only frame your view elegantly, they are great at keeping your home toasty when the sun goes down. For the most efficient insulation look for curtains with two to three layers that cover the whole window and run to the floor. If you are after blinds, the honeycomb variety has the best insulation rating.
2. Install a bioethanol fireplace
What would winter be without a fireplace? Well, if you don’t want the hassle of maintaining a crackling log fire, then an eco-friendly ethanol-fuelled fireplace should be on your list. Besides being smoke-free and clean burning, they are self-contained and don’t require a flue or chimney — allowing them to be installed anywhere, including under a TV. Portable units can even be used outdoors, allowing you to make use of your garden, terrace or patio anytime of the year.
3. Clean your guttering
You most probably don’t give your guttering much thought — which is where the problem lies. Come winter and autumn leaves clog everything up, and you end up on the roof in a storm trying to get it sorted. Clogged guttering can lead to all sorts of problems for your home, including leaks that will cost a lot to repair. Get ahead of the curve this long weekend and get them cleared — it will be so worth it, promise!
4. Insulate!
This might seem like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised how many homes are inadequately insulated. And while you need to look at your ceiling insulation, smaller DIY projects like installing weather stripping or putting a caulk gun to work will seal windows and doors from draughts — and help keep your home cosy throughout winter.
5. Re-seal your decking
Why not use the extended break to show your timber decking some love. After a long summer entertaining it is sure to need some attention. Decking oil is what you need — specially formulated to really penetrate the timber, providing weather resistance for up to a year or more. Use a soft brush or roller and look to apply at least two coats if you want it to last.
