When grocery shopping it makes sense to grab the freshest item on the shelf to buy.
But while it might be easy to tell with fruit and vegetables it can get a tad more tricky when it comes to pantry products.
Fortunately a now-viral TikTok video has revealed the tiny detail in supermarket bread that will help you know which one is the freshest – and you’ll be wondering why you never noticed it before.
TikTok user @tony.zakharia2 has over 233,000 followers who watch his videos about testing expired supermarket products.

But in a new video Tony revealed he never bought expired bread because of one handy trick.
“When it comes to bread though I always have the freshest – here’s a little life hack,” he said in the video.
Pointing out two loaves of breads on a Woolies shelf, Tony explained: “Turn the breads over we can see two clips; one red one meaning it was made on the Thursday and one white one meaning it was made on a Friday.
“So as you can see the red one expires on the 24th and the white one on the 25th – and that is why I take the freshest bread all the time.”

The video, which has since been viewed more than 1.4 million times, soon attracted hundreds of comments from people gobsmacked that the coloured tags actually had a purpose.
“Wait what,” one person wrote, while another added: “I had no idea.”
“I was today years old when I learned the colour of the bread clips has meaning,” another commented.
Several people who had worked for bread companies confirmed the video was correct, with one person commenting: “As I have worked for Tip-Top Bakeries for six years I can confirm the coloured tags are correct but ours is in a different order to the picture.”
“I worked in bread and I can happily tell you this is true but different companies have different tag colours,” another wrote.
Meanwhile several others said that while the tip was handy, it didn’t serve much of a purpose for them.
“I just put my bread in the freezer so it doesn’t go bad and take it out when I want to make toast etc. Being in QLD, it defrosts within two minutes,” one person joked.
“Bread lasts a day in my house. I’ll get yesterday’s discount bread,” another quipped.
