Popular doughnut returns after selling out

A viral doughnut that sold out within hours of being released is set to return — and this time even more Aussies can get their hands on one.

A viral doughnut that sold out within hours of hitting shelves is coming back.

Krispy Kreme launched a collaboration with Pistachio Papi – an Australian-owned and Italian-made nut spread – back in February, sending fans into a tailspin with the news.

The sweet treat quickly sold out in most stores on day one, and appeared to be completely wipes off shelves by day two.

But now, it can be revealed that customers in New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland can nab the Pistachio Overload Doughnut from May 21 until June 3.

Laura Pashby, marketing manager at Krispy Kreme ANZ, said the previous collab was an “absolute hit”.

“The response last time was incredible — we had fans flooding our inboxes asking (begging!) for it to return. So bringing it back was a no-brainer,” she said.

“The Pistachio Overload Doughnut has become one of our most-loved limited-time treats. This time around, we’ve ramped up production nationwide with extra hands on deck, so more Aussies can get a taste before it’s gone.”

It’s also the first time that customers in WA will get to try the green glazed pastry — as well as our friends in New Zealand.

Ms Pashby said she believed the doughnut took off because of the pistachio hype, which is in part due to the viral Dubai chocolate craze.

Mark Abdelmalik, the founder of Pistachio Papi, said doing the collaboration again was a no-brainer.

The “people wanted more, so we had to give the people what they wanted,” he said.

“We’ve been hearing from fans non-stop, asking for its return, and we’re beyond excited to work with the fabulous Krispy Kreme team again to make this nutty goodness a dream come true.

“We know Aussies are going to fall in love with this pistachio overload all over again.”

In February, fans were desperate to get their hands on the doughnut and shared their struggles on social media, with TikTok user @thecakeupartist posting a video of herself in the drive-through at Krispy Kreme asking for two of them.

“We don’t have that one unfortunately, we’ve sold out,” the worker can be heard explaining.

She said she was going to “cry” after being told, but stressed she would try again another day.

Another store resorted to putting a sign on the box at the drive-through to inform customers it had sold out of the treat.

Mr Abdelamlik revealed he had been inundated with messages about the in-demand product in a series of Instagram Stories – with one store already sold out by 8:40am on one of the days.

Sharing a number of messages from frustrated shoppers, Mr Abdelmalik said it was “ridiculous” that people were unable to get their hands on the sought-after item.

“Mate, Krispy Kreme Sydney airport was so underprepared. They said they got about 100 phone calls and they don’t have any. I was in the line in and about five people came after me came. I’ve just rocked up and there’s nothing there,” one text read.

Another said: “Fountain Gate was so quick.”

One added: “They sold out sooo quickly, by 8am Fawkner were sold out. They said they only get limited stock.”
