A popular menu item that has been available overseas for more than two decades has finally landed in Australia.
The McGriddle — which is essentially a McMuffin with maple-flavoured hot cakes instead of bread — was created by McDonald’s executive chef Gerald Thomlinson in 1999.
But the breakfast sandwich, which has become a staple in countries such as Canada and the United States, didn’t hit stores until June 2003.
McGriddles have never been available in Australia — until now, with fans of the fast food chain spotting the item at various locations around Sydney.
A spokesperson confirmed to news.com.au that the claims are indeed true.
“Macca’s is always looking for new ways to serve the perfect breakfast,” the spokesperson said.
“We are trialling soft, warm McGriddles in select restaurants across New South Wales only.
“McGriddles feature griddle cakes with the sweet taste of maple, with the combination of Sausage, Sausage and Egg, or Bacon and Egg, or simply enjoyed on its own.”
TikTok creator @littlemissfion was one of the first food content creators to spot the McGriddle Down Under.
“I got the Sausage and Egg McGriddle. It’s like a McMuffin but with pancakes and maple syrup,” she said.
Adrian Widjy, better known as Places in Sydney, said his “prayer was answered” with the McGriddle finally being available in his hometown.
“I always have them when I am in Japan or Hong Kong,” he said.
“Now it’s here where I am in Sydney.”
The elated content creator said the Sausage and Fried Egg was his personal favourite, loving the sweet and savory combination of the breakfast item.
The McGriddle has so far been spotted at locations such as Macquarie Centre, Kingsford, Sylvania, Croydon and Haberfield.
Social media users had a huge reaction to the breakfast item finally landing on menus in Australia.
“So excited. This is the only item the US Maccas has that we don’t have that’s actually good,” one social media user commented.
Another added: “As an American living in Australia, this is the one thing that I complain about all the time all I want is a McGriddle.”
“Bro I swear to God whoever lives in Sydney better buy them in BULK because I need them to release so I can finally try one,” one said.
Another commented: “TRYING TO LOCATE THE CLOSEST WESTERN SYD STORE HELP!”
“They’re amazing. best thing in America,” one added.
Another social media user said: “Wait.....you don’t have this normally in Australia?”
“They need to drop this nationwide ASAP,” one commented.
Someone else lamented: “Oh I wish they would bring them back to New Zealand I love them.”
