Have Twisties gone ‘completely crazy?’ New chip flavour shocks

An iconic chip brand has unveiled a “unexpected” new flavour – but Aussies have been left wondering if Twisties have gone “completely crazy?”

Wild new Twisties flavour lands on shelves

Caviar is one of the world’s most luxurious foods – but now Aussies who can’t afford to splurge on the delicacy can taste it in chip form.

Twisties have taken the expensive menu item often served on a bellini and turned it into a black snack as part of its latest in a long-line of “unexpected” flavours the brand has dished up in recent years.

Aussies won’t be able to buy a packet in supermarkets, where its popular Chicken and Cheese varieties are often sold. Instead, 30 packets a day will be given away via the brand’s social media page.

“We’re taking Twisties to a whole new level with the launch of Twisties Caviar,” Simon Odisho, Twisties Brand Manager, told news.com.au.

“People might be asking why we would combine the humble Twistie with one of the most luxurious flavours in the world, and we say to the critics – everyone deserves a bit of luxury in their life.

“Our new flavour brings together our famous Twistie and exquisite taste of caviar into one twisted snacking experience, and we know fans can’t wait to try it.”

Despite the fact no one has got their hands on the limited-edition release yet, news of Twisties Caviar has already begun circulating online.

“Twisties Caviar, yes this is real. Will be available only through a giveaway. Would you try?” Melbourne food blogger Nectorious Papi wrote on Facebook.

While the Grocery Geek AU said “we don’t know what to think about this” and urged its followers to “sit down for this one”.

“Twisties have announced their new Limited-Edition flavour creation, the wizards at Twisties are either geniuses or they have completely gone crazy,” the page posted.

“They say this latest Limited-Edition Twisties flavour creation is pure twisted decadence in culinary form! What is it? Well, they have created… Twisties Caviar!

“Yes, that’s right, Twisties Caviar flavour. So the question is are geniuses or have they lost it? Are you in?”

Many were quick to respond, stating they would definitely munch on the “weird” new flavour.

“Hell to the yeah I’d try these,” one wrote.

“I don’t know what caviar tastes like so I wouldn’t know if they get it right or not,” another pointed out.

As others described the new Twisties as “yuk”.

“Wish they would just leave Twisties alone,” another added.

“It’s not even April 1st,” mused someone else.

PepsiCo, who manufactures a number of beloved Australian chip brands, has been releasing a series of unusual Twisties flavours of late.

A “Spicy Ramen” flavour hit shelves in May, sparking much divide, which came after the brand dropped a raspberry-flavoured version at the start of last year that was followed by a cinnamon flavour in collaboration with Donut King.

Twisties originally launched in Australia 1950 with the iconic cheese flavour.

Its unique shape is made through the manufacturing process which involves feeding a mix of milled corn, rice, wheat and water into a machine known as a rotary head or random extruder.

This machine cooks the mix at high temperature and pressure while forming the pieces, resulting in the characteristic Twisties shape with the knobbly surface and squiggly shape.

After forming, the pieces are oven-baked before being flavoured with a coating of seasoning and vegetable oil.
