‘Could be better’: Macca’s responds to critics

The fast food giant's “ultimate burger upgrade” promises to deliver the crunchiest chicken burger yet, following mixed reviews of its predecessor.

McDonald's launches new outlet without burgers

Macca’s has created a “new and improved” crispy chicken burger after fans said the original “didn’t hit the mark”.

The fast good giant launched the McCrispy in Australia in September 2023 after the burger was met with rave reviews in the US market the year before.

The burger featured a crispy southern-style fried chicken sandwich topped with crinkle-cut pickles and served on a toasted potato roll.

But, this week, Macca’s relaunched the burger with what it described as the “ultimate burger upgrade” after fans claimed it “didn’t hit the mark”.

The burger now boasts a 100 per cent RSPCA-approved chicken breast with a crunchier coating, lettuce, a new ranch sauce and a soft, toasted bun. The McCrispy Deluxe also features tomato and Aussie Jack cheese.

“The McCrispy was a hit with Aussies the first time around, however there were still some that believed it could be better,” a Macca’s spokesperson told news.com.au.

“We know how passionate Aussies are about their chicken burgers. With our focus on growing our chicken portfolio, we’ve taken things to the next level – delivering what Aussies love in a great fried chicken burger.

“The result is our new McCrispy – it’s the crunchiest, juiciest, most mouth-watering fried chicken burger we’ve ever served.”

The brand said 98 per cent of its customers were open to giving things another go, with 65 per cent of Australians open to trying food and drink again — a rate higher than with movies, brands, hobbies or rekindling romance with an ex.

It wasn’t as though fans didn’t like the original, with Beau Newton saying it was “definitely crispy” in 2023. Meanwhile @tilly.elisaa gave it an eight out 10 and said she would get it again.

However, when getting a chicken burger, 46 per cent of Australians were desperate for that crispy crunch, Macca’s said — and some said that the original burger didn’t live up to that hype.

Popular food content creator Ange Eats tried both versions of the burger, saying that the original McCrispy “didn’t hit the mark at all”.

“It was a nice burger however it felt like it was lacking something and that something was the crunch,” Ange told news.com.au.

“This time around this burger is super crispy and crunchy. I could actually hear the crunch inside my mouth as I was chewing. Think KFC Original Recipe burger times 10 on steroids. “This new McCrispy burger is better and it is going to be my new go to burger. They’ve definitely changed the recipe to make it crispier and they’ve changed it for the better.”

Liana Dam described the new burger as some of Macca’s “best work yet”, saying it was the softest bun she’d ever seen from the fast food giant.

She was the item was “worth it”.
