Adelaide’s new Uniqlo store has opened amid much fanfare – including taiko drumming – at Westfield Marion.

It is the Japanese retailer’s second store in South Australia, and hundreds of shoppers rolled up for the grand opening; with no less than 300 lining up prior to the 10am start of trade.

SA’s first Uniqlo store at the Myer Centre in Rundle Mall opened its doors in November 2022. Back then, hundreds of fans of the global brand queued to be first in, best dressed in the “life wear” apparel for which Uniqlo is famous.

It includes puffer jackets and affordable luxury cashmere knits and linen shirts, plus garments with in-built technology such as UV protection.

Creating 50 jobs for locals, the Marion store is even bigger, exceeding its city counterpart’s 1000sq m of sales floor area. And, unlike the store in the Mall, Uniqlo Marion boasts an “extensive line-up for kids and babies”.

Sisters Brianna and Kayla Young were among the keen shoppers on Thursday, who were there for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“Uniqlo is really good quality for a great price and we were excited to be at the grand opening,” Brianna said, adding the taiko drummers were an extra thrill.

Emma Aves agreed, saying she loved the way Uniqlo had “dozens of colours to choose from” and used high-end materials, like souffle yarn, at a “fair price”.

The first 500 customers to spend $100 or more will receive a Uniqlo “From Tokyo to Marion” gift bag, and there are also other grand opening offers.

These include activities for kids, such as face painting and colouring in, on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, between 10am and 3pm.

Uniqlo has more than 2400 stores worldwide. The first Australian one – in Melbourne – launched in 2014.
