If you’re looking for Halloween outfit inspiration, look no further than Heidi Klum's legendary Halloween costumes. Having held her very first Halloween party in 2000, the supermodel revealed via a series of Instagram throwbacks in the lead up to her 2018 bash, that its inception came about as she “thought someone needs to be throwing a great Halloween party… so I did!”
Klum, whose first Halloween party saw her dress up in a patent leather German dirndl, used to do her own hair and make-up, all the while building her outfits from scratch—a far cry from the prosthetic-heavy costumes she now wows in. “In the beginning stages, I didn’t know about these [prosthetics] professionals yet and I did my own hair and make-up, and I had some people who would help me put the clothes together,” she recently told People.
In 2003, the supermodel had a whole grill made for her golden alien costume and in 2006, she dressed up as an apple, confessing her outfit choice was due to the fact that she was eight months pregnant. In 2010, she outdid herself by learning to walk on stilts to complete her giant glitter robot costume. “It wouldn’t have been the same if I didn’t tower over all of the guests,” she revealed on Instagram. In 2011, Klum threw not one but two Halloween parties in both Las Vegas and New York City. Her ape costume for the New York City event also marked the model’s first foray into the use of prosthetics.
Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the model held her annual Halloween party a month later, enlisting the help of Santa and taking the opportunity to collect everything from food to toys and toiletries before delivering them to families in need. Klum’s previously revealed that her 2013 costume, which saw her transform into an old lady while sitting in a make-up chair for a total of 10 hours, was one for her all-time favourites. “When I arrived, it took everyone a little bit before they realized it was me,” she captioned an image of the disguise on Instagram.
“This time it’s going to be very cute,” Klum told People of her 2018 costume, which turned out to be Fiona from Shrek (with her husband in the namesake role). “It’s not gonna be scary; it’s going to be very, very cute.”
In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic forced Klum to cancel her annual party–but that doesn't mean she didn't celebrate. Instead of her party, Klum created a frighteningly fabulous horror video with her family, in which she had her husband and children star as mummies (see below).
By 2022, Klum was back in full force, stepping out in a costume that we would describe as nightmare fuel, apt for the spooky day, but what she would simply call a human-sized worm, a Halloween look that continues to haunt us to this day. When it came to her 2023 costume, Klum leaned to the more resplendent, dressing as the body of a peacock with a group of backing dressers standing in for the bird's signature patterned plumes.
And in 2024, Klum was as committed as ever to the Halloween costume, dressing alongside husband Tom Kaulitz as E.T. from Steven Spielberg's 1982 epic, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Given that we’ve see her dressed as everything from a witch and an alien, to Betty Boop, Jessica Rabbit and the Thriller werewolf—we are always holding our breath each October to see what she’ll arrive in for her next annual star-studded extravaganza.
