Even with all the tables that are set in the dining room, on the patio and in the cellar, the ever-popular Victory Hotel can still run out of room.

Even with all the tables that are set in the dining room, on the patio and in the cellar, the ever-popular Victory Hotel can still run out of room.
That’s where the lawn comes in and (keep this our secret), when the weather is smiling and the view along the coastline is beckoning, there is no better place to be. Rugs and chairs are spread across the grass, the low stone wall used as an impromptu table, as guests graze on a special outdoor menu of nibbles still including the signature squid that is hauled in just to the south at Myponga Beach.
Regulars inside know to look for the specials that are scrawled on a roll of paper near the bar before making any decisions – not that there is a lack of choices on the regular list that brings together pub classic burgers, steaks and schnitzels with king george whiting cooked however you like it and more ambitious fare.
Chefs Patrick White and Glenn Worrall are particularly fond of punchy Asian flavours in dishes such as master stock duck leg with caramelised mandarin, yuzu mayonnaise and a Chinese black vinegar and chilli dressing.
Whichever way you go, owner Doug Govan’s extraordinary wine list and cellar has the right bottle for any occasion and nobody is going to lift an eyebrow if you want a glass of burgundy with that burger.
