You can book as well, though only for the light-drenched upstairs loft where the blue-cushioned booths are highly recommended for a comfy session. Downstairs is all long benches and stools, perfect for impromptu gatherings or eating on the run.
The kitchen’s core focus is on its wood grill with a burger, squid, lamb and pork chops, as well as five steak options — the steak frites is a classic choice if you’re in need of a quick fix and a glass of wine.
Offal also is celebrated and this is one of the few places you will find brains and sweetbreads handled well. There is also a roast suckling pig feasting menu at $92/head, minimum 10, with 24 hours notice required.
Pasta, fish, roast chicken and an eight-hour braised beef brisket with mac and cheese also feature. It all sounds heavily fleshy and protein driven but six vegetable dishes even up the register with plenty of big flavours attached to each. Even the garden salad is a light meal in itself.
There’s something about the menu and the vibe here that demands a good drink, and the aperitif, beer, spirit and wine side of things is superbly curated with an ever-evolving list of always interesting by-the-glass pours that favour Australian producers. By the way, any bottle under $100 also is available as a half bottle for an equivalent half bottle fee.
Staff are engaged and very helpful in both food and wine matters which makes for a lively evening both for travellers and regulars — and there’s an associated bar, Proof, if you want a pre or post dinner refreshment. The whole package, then.
