A trek through the Flinders Ranges is one of the state’s great regional adventures and The Prairie is like an oasis along the way.
It’s comfy, with a welcoming bar and tables set outside to take in the most spectacular sunsets you will surely ever see. Good food and a fun mood make this historic hotel a great base for Outback journeys.
Starters feature the Prairie’s famous Feral Antipasto, or try the Feral Mixed Grill as a main. The platter is a novel step away from the usual cheese board, with tiny flags, like yellow road signs, signalling the native meats. There’s Orroroo kangaroo pastrami, Mathies’ camel mettwurst, and an emu pate, along with goat cheese, a punchy bush tomato chilli jam, roasted veg, olives and good bread. It’s a fascinating Outback array, although some might see rich emu pate as an acquired taste.
A fall-apart-tender peppery goat curry is a good follow-up, aptly garnished with saltbush. Other options are Spencer Gulf king george whiting, roo schnitzels and roo, emu or camel Prairie burgers.
Stick with the bush theme and finish with a quandong pie with roast almond gelato.
Plan ahead. Lunch bookings are essential. At this stage, only house guests are invited for dinner and check the website for height-of-summer closures.
