Will it be the slow cooked lamb with jerusalem artichoke or the local mushrooms with polenta and parmesan?
In a restaurant where the choices all demand a tasting, the “feed me” option is more tempting than ever. The chef will turn on a spread of morsels for $49, or $59 with dessert, great value if you like to graze.
Switched-on staff have a direct line to the kitchen and will be across all the dishes in the mix, so pump them for information if there are one or two things you’re particularly keen to taste. Regardless of what you choose to eat, it will be a lovely kickback outing in this cool open space with big new wrap-around verandas totally open when the sun is smiling and fresh landscaping lending a picnic-day feel.
The wines are mostly Calabria drops gleaned from the winery’s sprawling vineyards that fill the panoramic Barossa view.
Popular dishes include an earthy hummus ready to be scooped up with warm flatbread straight from the fiery pizza oven.
Char-grilled cauliflower is another winner, as is satisfying crispy fried chicken plated with purple cabbage plus green peppercorns for a light kick.
Locals say the salted caramel sundae, right on trend, is among the drawcards for return visits. It’s simplicity, and why not, with good vanilla ice cream and a sweet crunch of toffee popcorn.
