In an ideal world, you would catch the seafood for dinner during a visit to the Eyre Peninsula. But, for those without a boat, a rod or the inclination to drop a line, the next best option is the Fresh Fish Place.

Located a few minutes from the centre of Port Lincoln, this cleverly integrated combination of processor, retail shop and cafe more than lives up to its name.

Visitors can watch as tubs of glistening local fish are scaled and dissected by the experts and then choose whether to take home sparkling fresh fillets of king george whiting – or eat them already grilled or battered with chips and a Greek salad at a table next door.

The range of seafood offered by this diner is extraordinary. A sashimi platter includes raw kingfish, salmon and rarely seen bluefin tuna, for instance, while the fish and chips come in seven varieties.

Other options include salt and pepper squid (or, even better, calamari including the tentacles and wings), fish burgers, prawn cocktail or wild abalone either fried tempura-style or poached.

The fisherman’s basket is a greatest hits collection when choosing becomes too hard.

A new deck at the front of the property has plenty of shade and views out over Proper Bay.
