This restaurant and bar perched on top of an old bank building at one of the city’s most prominent corners should be high on the list of places to take visitors to Adelaide — and not just for the view.

Even in the depths of a wintry night the outdoors bar is comfortable under see-through screens and with heating, while the restaurant snuggles inside. On balmy summer evenings, it is something else again.

A good bar suggests a good wine list, and 2KW’s is exceptional, with interesting wines from across SA and the world. The large number of excellent wines by the glass invite experimentation.

The cooking is well awake to contemporary trends in Adelaide and beyond. Roasted enoki mushrooms with walnut miso and WA octopus and mussel escabeche with black beans have dark and earthy tones, in contrast to the clear-singing tuna ceviche, or sweet blue swimmer crab flesh piled generously on a crumpet. Outstanding.

The choice of foods leaves the waiter to suggest a good combination that suits the sharing philosophy, so sides and entrees can be mixed to work with the bigger meals, such as the slow-cooked and suitably moist $55 lamb shoulder which can stretch to a main course for four. Another main, a Murray cod fillet, is so perfect in its charred skin and barely cooked flesh that it makes you wish again that all those carp would go away.

Sharing usually stops with really good desserts. String doughnuts with pumpkin ice cream serves the sweet tooths well, while the cheese offerings come mostly from France.
