Caravan drivers praised for simple act to keep everyone safe on the road

"Having one and using it makes it a lot safer for both parties."

How to camp right in Australia : What you need to know

When you’re heading on the road with your caravan for a long period of time, there are plenty of things to keep in mind.

But, the most important thing - and the thing that’s sometimes easiest to forget - is ensuring you’re being conscious of other drivers.

Dash cam footage from one Aussie truck driver has reminded us all of just that, and the product you need to do it.

“Good on you, mate!”

South Australian man Ben, on Facebook as The Drone Way, has taken to the platform to share some dash cam footage featuring a conversation between himself and another driver pulling a caravan.

In the clip, the caravan driver contacts Ben using his ultra high frequency (UHF) radio, letting him know that he’s free to pass when possible.

“Just let us know when you want to go and we’ll back down, okay?” the driver said.

Ben then replies saying: “Good on you, mate. Much appreciated. I’ll go after these two cars if that’s okay with you.”

In the clip, you can see the two cars pass before the caravan shifts off to the left, as the truck slowly merges into the right lane to overtake.

“It’s about sharing the road and being courteous”

Commenters on the video, which now has 1.8 million views, were quick to commend the caravan driver on their communication and quick thinking.

“Great work. It’s about sharing the road and being courteous,” one commenter said.

“It's not hard is it? Great to see,” said another.

“That’s the way to do it, everyone's a winner,” a third agreed.

Some even said this is something they’ve always been doing when driving a caravan.

“I do this when towing my van, as soon as I see a road train coming behind me I'm on the radio to them, an endeavour to get them around as soon as possible, once they are in the opposite lane to come around I slow down to get them around quicker,” said one commenter.

“we always talk with the truck drivers or caravans behind us.. Trucks are always very happy and thank us... we travel always on channel 40,” another agreed.

“Always do this when travelling, and it’s always appreciated,” said a third.

“It’s a lot safer for both parties!”

But, if you’re driving a caravan and don’t have a UHF radio, the message is clear - get on it!

“All caravaners, I MEAN ALL, that don’t have a UHF radio need to get one, even a hand held cheapie and do what this driver did. Awesome and makes you feel good when you do it. Trucks have a strict schedule, caravaners don’t. It’s that simple,” one commenter urged.

“Having one and using it makes it a lot safer for both parties,” another agreed.

“When towing a caravan a 2way radio is essential . We're not on the road to irritate the truckie they are working and generally on a tight schedule,” said a third.
