Prefer to pimp your man cave or she shed away from the family home? An Adelaide entrepreneur has the answer - luxe storage units with a price tag to match.

Luxurious storage units billed as man caves or she sheds are being sold in Adelaide for the first time, offering people the opportunity to escape their garage and relax away from home.

Cubi Lonsdale is a new project in Adelaide’s south featuring 36 boutique industrial units, which can be customised to include a loft-style mezzanine, airconditioning, a kitchenette and bathroom.

Designed by Luxo Projects, the purpose-built units range in price from $189,000 to $400,000, and are proving popular with owner-occupiers seeking more room to store cars and entertainment equipment, or to expand their small business.

Ric Hambrook, director of Luxo Projects, said he was struggling for space at his Seacliff home when he designed the “man cave” warehouse facility, which will be built on a site on O’Sullivan Beach Rd.

“I was looking to purchase a boat and I couldn’t find anywhere to store it,” he said.

“So it stemmed from there.

“We knew there would be a market for it here in Adelaide. The whole man cave thing is very appealing for people.”

About 60 per cent of the Cubi Lonsdale units, which range in size from 44sq m to 176sq m, have been sold off the plan since going on the market in January.

Mr Hambrook said “tradies” were the biggest buyers so far, while there were also some interstate investors.

“They (tradies) work out of home and they have all their work equipment cluttering up their garage,” he said. “These man caves or she sheds store all of their gear, and upstairs they can use as their office.”

The storage unit-turned-man cave trend started in the US where units have been remade as a home-away-from-home, complete with bar fridges, televisions and leather couches.

In recent years, developers in NSW, Victoria and Queensland have followed suit with similar offerings.

Construction on Cubi Lonsdale is expected to start later this year and be completed by April 2023.
