Abbie Chatfield has sparked debate after she revealed that if she were to marry her boyfriend she would take his last name.
Chatfield recently released a video where she revealed she’d tried to reserve AbbieHyde as an Instagram handle. Hyde is the last name of Abbie’s boyfriend and Peking Duck band member, Adam Hyde.
She said she was “down so bad”. But a fan urged Chatfield to “keep your name”.
In a follow up clip, Chatfield revealed a little known fact about herself.
“Big reveal. Legally my surname actually isn’t Chatfield and it hasn’t been for two years,” she said.
“I changed my name to a different family name. I am changing it as soon as I can. Whether I married a man or a woman or a non-binary person I would take their surname in a f***ing instant.”
She said she has no emotional attachment to her former last name or her current surname. Chatfield said if she had to have a man’s surname, she wanted it to be Hyde’s as he “loved and respected” her and she loved and respected him.
She said she didn’t want the name of a man who left his family.
Chatfield first revealed on the ‘Fair Enough’ podcast in March 2023 that she had changed her last name to her mother’s maiden name, explaining she would retain the name Chatfield for professional purposes.
However, many had no idea that the popular media personality had changed her name.
“Wait so what’s your name?” one fan asked.
One said: “That’s how I felt about my dad’s surname. Could not wait to ditch that for absolutely anything else.”
“Guuuurl mood! I changed mine to my mothers maiden name for much the same reasons, and if I never find someone so be it, but byyyye to our fathers names,” another revealed.
One commented: “oh hey girl, I did this too.”
She has not revealed what her surname is publicly.
“My mum’s maiden name is … It isn’t hard to pronounce, but it’s not easy upon looking at it, so ‘Chatfield’ is much easier,’ she said on the ‘Fair Enough’ podcast.
“Marketing, guys! You can’t get rid of your stage name!”
The debate about whether a woman should change her last name when she marries a man isn’t a new one. However Chatfield’s admission sparked a whole new conversation.
“My husband and I ditched both our surnames when we got married and just picked a random new last name. Free will and remembering you can live life how you want is so much fun. We also got married on a Tuesday,” one said.
Another said: “When I got married I took my husband’s name even though it felt anti-feminist because I had no connection to my surname and I wanted to share a name with the person I loved.”
“My mum has changed her last name to Wildflower because she didn’t want to have a man last name anymore,” one commented.
Another added: “Each to their own Abbie I see your point. I regret taking my husbands name even though I deeply loved him when we were married.”
“I hate my dad and couldn’t wait to take my husband’s name. Wanted to remove all of my dad I could,” one shared.
