American's 'random question' about Bluey has Aussie fans shocked

We thought everyone knew this!

The real-life places that brig Bluey to life

Bluey has taught viewers around the world all kinds of things about Australia, like how we celebrate birthdays, the funny hats we wear on Christmas, and the fact that sometimes our toilets are in a little room separate from our main bathrooms.

But, there’s one more thing that Americans in particular are struggling to get their heads around, and it has to do with one place in particular.

“Random question…”

An international viewer has taken to the Adult Bluey Fans Facebook page to ask a question about the ‘chemist’ seen in Bluey.

“Random question for Australian people… are pharmacists commonly referred to as chemists like Bandit was doing in “TV Shop”,” the post said.

TV Shop is the 25th episode of Bluey season 3, where Bluey and Bingo, and a few of their other friends, play with the CCTV cameras in the chemist.

“Both are correct!”

Commenters on the post said that, yes, the pharmacy is called the chemist in Australia.

“Yep get your medicine from the chemist! As well as perfume, jelly beans, makeup and a whole lot more especially from chemist warehouse 😆” one commenter said.

“Yeah I go to the chemist,” said another.

However, others did clarify that both are technically correct, and are used interchangeably.

“Yes, but either is actually used. In Australia and in New Zealand. So you might say “I need something from the chemist” or something from the Pharmacy. Both are correct and common,” one commenter said.

“We have chemist warehouse and priceline pharmacy so both work,” said another.

“Chemist and pharmacy are interchangeable for the most part. I always say I'm going to the chemist, but the person who gives me my meds is a pharmacist 😅” a third added.

“The pharmacy is inside the chemist,” clarified another.

Chemists are everywhere!

Other fans from all over the world also took to the comments, confirming that pharmacies are called chemists in lots of different places.

“Australia Ireland England and New Zealand all referred to the pharmacy as a chemist,” one commenter said.

“My husband is from South Africa and also refers to the pharmacy as the chemist,” said another.

“Yeah, common in Britain and all the dominion countries I think,” a third confirmed.

However, of course, the one in the show is based on one in Australia - our very own Chemist Warehouse.

“Even our biggest chemist group is called ‘Chemist Warehouse’ which is the one featured in Bluey (with a name change),” one commenter noted.

“Yes and we have a chemist warehouse which is a play on the one shown in the pic,” another agreed.
