“Has this always been a thing?”
An ALDI shopper has taken to the ALDI Mums Facebook group to ask about a small fee she noticed on her receipt from the store, after doing her groceries.
“Has this always been a thing? I only just noticed it,” she said.
In the receipt pictured, you can see two different credit surcharges - labelled Credit Surcharge GST A and B - totalling 84 cents.
But, the poster had no idea why it was.
“I didn’t know this!”
Commenters on the post were quick to confirm that it is a thing - and has been forever. But, not everyone was aware.
“I noticed it too for the first time the other day. Was surprised,” said one commenter.
“I've never noticed before either. Appreciate your sharing,” another said, thanking the poster.
“I didn’t know this!” said a third.
As for the reason why, shoppers said it had to do with how you were paying, with many people - depending on your bank and card type - being charged more for tapping your card, rather than inserting.
Regardless of the reason, though, people weren’t happy about it, calling the act incredibly sneaky on ALDI’s part.
“I always insert my card into the machine and don’t have extra charges. If you tap there is a surcharge. Very sneaky,” one person said.
“Insert your card, just make sure you remember your pin. Be interesting to know just how much profit is made by people tapping their cards and being charged this surcharge,” another said.
“[It’s] the main reason I don’t shop at ALDI… Hopefully the government goes through with stopping businesses from charging these surcharges to use card, especially as they are wanting to steer towards cashless,” a third person shared.
“Complete BS!! I don’t carry my physical card on me so it’s annoying,” another person agreed.
ALDI explains
ALDI has confirmed that this is indeed no new thing, saying that the surcharge is included on all credit card and contactless purchases to ensure prices on their products stay low, rather than passing on the cost via price inflation.
This is made apparent to customers on the Eftpos terminals.
To avoid this surcharge, insert your card and select savings or chequing.
